I've been playing EG for about week now and I think most of the critical reviews are pretty unfair. Gamespot in particular, it seems like the reviewer didn't know how to play the game (it's difficult) and bashed it due mostly to his misunderstanding. In example the original (now edited) review said that there was no manual save system. EG's save system is just like many other games, autosaves, quick saves and manual saves from the menu. How do you review a game and not figure out how to save? Anyway.

The game requires a lot of patience and has a pretty big learning curve. It looks simple from the outset but unless you want your hidden lair overrun with government agents you need to manage your life of crime carefully.

Lair design/trap enplacement are crucial to the game. Knowing a little trick that the game autosaves whenever super agents (your enemy) are about to appear on the World Domination map is critical too. (You can switch to the map and tell you agents to hide, they will unhide themselves in a few minutes after the bad guys are gone.) Manage your heat by moving agents out of territories and allowing the heat to die down a bit. Build your lair with your barracks, mess hall and other non-heat inducing rooms at the front. That way any enemy agent who gets in your lair will find nothing of interest. (a rifle rack generates heat if seen, a bed does not). Don't put traps in hallways frequented by minions as they will set them off occassionally and get caught in them if they are nearby when a bad guys sets them off. One recent solution I read was to build hallways that go nowhere and line them with traps, that way your minions will stay out but enemy agents may wander down there. (Sometimes agents get in your lair by "tunnelling" and just showing up in a room, this can be frustrating but a good security system will alert you). Use your social minions to psychologically weaken enemy agents and they will get so confused they sit around in a daze.

I'm certainly not an Evil Genius yet and I didn't mean for this to be a review or a guide, but if you are interested in this game enough to put some time into learning how to play you'll probably enjoy yourself. The game could use more humor, more actions for your EG (they can't do much) and better tie in from the lair screen to the world domination screen. (just knowing that an autosave means something is happening on the world screen isn't good enough)

I like it and it dragged me away from Sims2, which can only be a good thing.
