I went to my bosses office and was straight with him, showed him the NA materials I had, and had my sponsor there to talk to him. Bottom line was he accepted the fact that I wouldn't pass the test and allowed me to skip it, but required me to attend NA meetings twice a week, and checked up on me all the time, and really helped me kick the habit. 3 months later I actually took the test and was clean, and then he asked me to take a test every month just to show that I was working.
Most bosses are understanding if your honest with them...

Very true (about bosses) and a great story. Most cases if you are honest and showing you are working on being clean BEFORE the test the bosses will do what they can. (That's why a lot of times word of the "random" test will spread through where you work before it happens.)
However, if you wait to the day of the test, then they know the only reason you came forward is because you know you'll pop. That is almost as bad as popping.
That was the case when I was in the Navy also, if you told them before you were tested, they would send you to rehab classes and work with you. But pop and you were pretty much other than honorably discharged (OTH).
MR. MEPHISTO:
The reason why a lot of factories and manual labor jobs are piss testing is not to invade privacy, but for workers' comp and insurance purposes they have to now. They figure it will cut down usage and work accidents along with better product being made. What's really bad now, is that if you have an accident on the job, they will automatically test you (in most cases I have seen even before the Dr. will treat the person) and if you pop, you don't get workers' comp. Plus, at least in Ohio some of the places have in their handbook that they can charge you for any damage done in an accident if you pop positive (whether you were stoned on the job or not).
