Well first of all, there are still people who believe and partake in bigamy and polygamy, as well as "open relationships", so not everyone is being "kept from their full potential" as you put it.
Something I think has held back potential, in the same vein, is romanticism. The concept of romance has increased the expectations of many people in regards to relationships and sexual activity, and has also made it more complex than it has to be. Hand in hand with romanticism are the dreaded women's magazines such as Cosmo and whatever else. These magazines have relationship and sex advice written, quite evidently, by stupid, self-involved nincompoops that wouldn't know a testicle from a tootsie pop. I should add that many men's magazines are the same way (Maxim, FHM, Stuff), in that all of these magazines cause people to overthink sexual and emotional relationships to the point where it's corrupting society. I also blame Oprah.
