I think the answer really is that if you two can't handle the mess, then you aren't ready for it at this point in your relationship. Because, really, a mess is just a mess, there is no meaning behind it and messes are easily cleaned up. It is definitely an intimacy issue... and the more intimate you get, the messier it should be.
