Most of those channels I idle in because I use them for technical questions every now and then, and I peek in every now and then to see if there are any questions I can help with. There's another channel on that server I idle in because I'm friends with some of the people in there and, again like #tfp, by idling I can always jump in the conversation at any time.
Basically, I think if one has a constant connection, there's no reason to not idle in the IRC channels you frequent.
