I think you expect too much from French
It's a language that is used in alot of african countries still, canada, france, and a number of other countries with french-speaking parts or communities.
Don't expect it to rise to the level of English, but don't think it's gonna die out at all
But like I said earlier: regular french, nothing beats hands-on experience by actually going to one of those parts of the world. In-depth, you're going to have to take courses at a univ, but that should come after you have a decent grasp of it.
Like maleficent said, it really depends on the level of french you are willing to teach
