Authentication is already checked by default when you set it up. If you want to check it, go to
Tools\Account Settings\Server Settings
Most of the time "Use secure connection" and "Use secure authentication" should be unchecked, for regular pop3 use.
Is it connection refused due to invalid protocol or is it a bad mail server? Everytime I've gotten that error I typed in the server wrong.
And as Latch said, the password box should come up when you try to connect to the mail server.
