I am a die-hard Age Of Empires (II, Conquerors Expansion) player. In the years that it has been out (3 or 4?) it has been the first game I have installed on each of my new systems. I think StarCraft but you need to micromanage to much. In AOE you tell a villager to farm, they farm until they die or the game ends. Plus there is a really, really handy "Idle Villager" button that lets you know if someone is just loafing and not doing anything. I have been involved in some heated and fercious battles (combining both land and sea) with some friends. We would be on the verge of eliminating one another but we would rebuild and a game could last several hours (the longest game I was ever involved was 6 hours). Personally, I think its the best RTS game ever. Period. End of story. Plus, you should be able to find it in the bargin bin.
P.S. I liked C&C: Generals but it got a little repetitive. Also, Rise Of Nations, like Starcraft, there was tooooooo much micromanagement.
