PSV Eindhoven have admitted they are monitoring the progress of teenage sensation Freddy Adu and feel they could have a chance of landing the coveted 14-year-old.
Adu is one of the world's hottest properties and is expected to move on from Major League Soccer club DC United before he ends his teenage years.
All of Europe's major players are keen on landing the supremely gifted forward, but PSV feel they could be in pole position as Adu's girlfriend has opted to return to the Netherlands.
Stephanie Herz is a gifted tennis player, but she has opted to quit Nick Bollettieri's Florida academy in favour of a return to her home country.
It is being claimed Adu is ready to follow Herz to Europe, news which has put PSV on red alert.
"Our scouts have been monitoring his progress for a long time and we would like to have him," PSV chairman Harry van Raaij told De Telegraaf. "We are assessing all the options that would enable us to bring him to Eindhoven."
PSV technical director Frank Arnesen is aware of Adu's girlfriend's return to the Netherlands, but feels they may miss out on his signature.
"We would love to sign him," said Arnesen. "But I am not sure we will be able to get him.
"Even if he moves here with his girlfriend Stephanie, there is no guarantee he would get a work permit.
"I don't think loaning him to a Belgian club would be a viable option.
"We are in contact and are talking and let's hope one day that we can sign him."
PSV have forged close links with Chelsea and Arnesen hinted that could be an avenue worth exploring.
Chelsea have signed flying forward Arjen Robben from PSV and have also secured a deal with talented Brazilian defender Alex.
The Blues have signed Alex from Santos but, as part of the deal, the defender will spend at least one season with PSV.
It is believed that the two clubs are considering a similar agreement to bring Adu to Europe.
"Freddy is sure to play for a top European club," he added. "Hopefully it will be at PSV first and then perhaps Chelsea.
"I have, however, been told that he is a fan of Ajax."

Poor kid's got no chance of living up to the hype. He's being touted (sold to the highest bidder) as Pele and Ronaldo rolled into one.
