Fuel-injected cars won't diesel.. When you shut it off it kills the fuel pump, injectors, and engine computer/ignition system.
I agree that it's most likely the ignition switch. It was a $10, 15-minute job on my Thunderbird, don't know what it's like on a PT Cruiser.
