To me it's just friendly ribbing. It goes both ways. I've been considering moving to Canada for some time now, and if I do I won't let the good natured ribbing bother me. If it does, I'll speak up.
As far as letting people know where you're from, I don't think its a good or bad idea. Shouldn't matter. I'd never hide the fact that I'm American. No matter what, I always will be American born and bred. Does that define who I am? No. And I should hope that people wouldn't judge me on that.
