I've gotten that feeling before....I think the 'sand in the neck' description was adequately put.
It usually came about because I had done a lot of neck cracking in the past few days. If it ever comes about, I take it as a sign that I need to stop for a few days and then it goes away again. Since the human skeleton regrows itself over time, I'm assuming that whatever bone I ground up from so much cracking has been recycled and my spine has allowed itself to regrow back to its normal shape.
So anyway....if you get that feeling I would suggest holding off on irritating or aggressively moving your neck for a while until things settle. Worked well enough for me.
