In the first battle, Flay Vs. Sakai, Sakai mentioned that Iron Chef Chinese couldn't make the trip. Sakai used shark fin in his first dish that evening as a tribute to his "good friend".
I've watched both battles so far and I've disagreed with the judges scoring in each episode. I thought the dishes prepared by Saki and Morimoto were more much more appealing visually and more original that what the american chefs put together.
Is this going to become a new series on the food network? I really don't think I'm going to bother watching it after these initial international battles. The appeal of Iron Chef, at least to me, is the exotic and bizzare nature of the show. The live squid, the silly dubbed voices, the completely over the top chairman, these are the reasons I enjoyed the original Iron Chef. This new version puts me to sleep.
