Alice was and is a GREAT ARTIST. His concerts are among the best I've ever seen (and I've seen Floyd, Mccartney, Stewart,the Stones and so on).
I think Alice's "label" was put there by some of the freakish things he did in the 70's. He was the first to turn his concerts into theatrical shows, often with violent undertones (not many others guillotined women and babies on stage). He was hardcore and pushed the envelope.
As he has said Alice is not evil, Alice is someone that just can't be trusted.
Not really the answer you were looking for I suppose but Alice is original, and so over the top, that in a label happy world where everything is labelled "Hardcore" is the only thing that fit.
