Being careful and taking your time are very important. Don't put any pressure on the person you are interested in. I would suggest starting with a casual group outing. Then as you get to know said person, perhaps move more toward hanging out minus the group, and then toward a date-type outing.
Should things not work out, for whatever reason, it may create a temporary rift, but should not permanently damage the friendship in question. Just don't be a jerk about it, and your friend (if indeed they are a good friend) shouldn't have problems.
