Yes, I have met women online and ended up meeting later that night. It was years ago and I wouldn't do it again. It is no more dangerous than meeting someone at a bar and taking them home with you. It is also a great avenue to meet more people if your life is pidgeonholed with work and other extracurricular activities.
I had a few experiences where they didn't look remotely close to the pic they sent, but in those cases, I just met them for a drink then said LATER!
