Are women looking at adult material??

I always wondered if this it by nature or culture...likely a bit of both.
From the dynamic I've seen...men are very visual in a sexual context. (including gay males)
And women tend to be a bit more exhibitionist in their wardrobe with showing skin than men. (men tend to layer, from what I've seen...at least lately after the "sexual revolution")

Or is this a double-standard? Because women won't typically be prosecuted for flashing their tits or undies...men are gone after quicker and harder for flashing, nor are they as willing to do so. (at least what I've been around)
And I could be wrong here. But it seems to be true even in the media. (not porn, of course...but most other general media)

But does this translate into the willing to watch adult material? And I'm not talking about exceptions or outliers...but major patterns and trends in some volume.
Or is it just a different types??

As others have said above, mostly I've seen women be interested in some "titillation" activities...some written stuff too.
But not full on XXX porn...this is atypical. At least what they admit to.

Then again, it's more "acceptable" and in more volume for women to buy adult toys than men. (at least this was the tendency I saw when I clerked in the Adult Bookshop)
But it's been 25 years since...and the internet has taken off.
So the pattern may have change...especially with the younger women.

But I'm not about to ask my niece and her friends. (nope, don't think so...I'll keep my DOM to myself...and she can have her own "interesting" side...I don't want to know)

I think the "women don't like porn as much as men do" thing is a complete and utter myth. We're just consumers of different kinds of porn.

For example, I read manga. Yaoi/BL manga, which focus on sexual relationships between men that may or may not be sexually explicit in their depictions, are increasingly popular in the United States. In fact, my favorite title just got licensed a few months back and is going to finally see a serious release in the U.S. These stories are aimed for women--the men in these are typically emotionally available and open with each other, and that makes it really appealing to read. And then there's the hot dude-on-dude boning. In these manga, the visual aspect is married to the story aspect.

These kinds of things are just a different iteration of the classic romance novel, which lacks the visual aspect, but is nonetheless titillating. My mother's generation read a lot of romance. My mom had three copy paper boxes worth of romance novels that she passed on to me when I was 12-13. I read them all. There is a range of content in these things. I still have one, Island Flame, that has major consent issues and a couple rape scenes.

The Internet has allowed women to be consumers of visual pornography. I think the world has been in denial for a long time that women weren't watching.

 

Well, this was exactly what I was asking...if women are looking at adult material more.

Now, IMHO...adult material is kind of obvious... things that would likely get you fired from work, arrested for flashing, graphic verbiage to a large extent or blatant showing of skin.
I'm not including bathing suits, unless they're posture is overly sexual. (let's not get into border-line things that can be easily seen on prime time pay channels)
I'm talking real adult material here. Porn, but perhaps a bit more than porn...but I'm sure you get my point. Let's not split hairs.

And I will say, even though I'm very open minded...MOST women will not admit to viewing this. At least publicly in mixed company.
Men are a bit more, nudge-nudge, about it.
So excuse me if I'm seeming naive here...I'm not. I'm just asking an out and out question...because most females won't say it to my face...or many others' faces.

If they are...then great. I love it.
The more the merrier.

I'm just waiting for the time when women can be as open about their sexuality as men are.

Because of my profession, not as often anymore. I think the "problem" I have and many others do too (both men & women) is that we are still putting women on a pedestal.
Not in a respect context...we should all respect them as humans and their own strengths.

But in what's "appropriate"...how many times can a woman hear that's not "appropriate" for you to do. That's not really said to men, except when flashing their johnson in non-adult media.

I spent a good half an hour yesterday browsing the dedicated BL section at one of the largest bookstores in the world. There were several shelves, all separate from the other manga, largely due to the content. It was hard to resist the urge to buy a random copy of the fifth volume of Junjou Romantica, given that I don't know when the series will be licensed in English again. It was funny to see books with parental advisories on them.

The takeaway? If women weren't buying these things, there wouldn't be a whole section in Powell's just for them.

I meant to go look at the other erotic novels while there, perhaps make some purchases, but I blew all of the time I had on my own looking at manga and other nerd things in the nerd (gold) room. I APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING.

 

I find that the erotica (not "romance," but actual erotica) section in many bookstores is larger than the poetry section.
