Celebrating 40 years of cultural preservation...
    UNESCO World Heritage Centre
    [IMG]
In November 1972, the UN's Educational, Scientific, & Cultural Organization signed the World Heritage Convention. Countries then lined up to put their most treasured cultural landmarks and national parks on the list to become World Heritage Sites. First among their ranks were the Galapagos Islands, an area that has become such a popular tourist destination that it is presently at risk (article). But there are many sites that have prospered because of this international status. The latest World Heritage Site is the wreckage of the Titanic (story).

Have you visited any UNESCO World Heritage Sites?
    How many?(checklist)
    Which ones?
    What made the experience(s) memorable?
Tell us about a couple of these places. Share photos.

Camping in the Smokies in autumn was incredibly beautiful. Depending on what elevation you were in, the leaves were in various stages of their color. [IMG]

Daniel_ The devil made me do it...

    Shockingly, I've visited about twenty.

Prague (very nice - was there on business, but only for the day)
Loire valley (pretty - family holiday as a younger man, one of few good holidays with my first wife)
Mont Saint Michel (many times over the years, beautiful, and some great restaurants)
Amiens Cathedral (the last holiday I went on with my parents, I was about 20)
Strasbourg (part of a school trip aged 15 - don't remember much)
Banks of the Seine (went on 1st january - the whole city was deserted, most tranquil)
Le Havre (caught the ferry to there many times)
Tel Aviv (on business in the 90s. Sunniest place I have ever been. Worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to)
George Town Malaysia (so hot. so wet. such good seafood)
    Durham Cathedral (beautiful, and rainy)
Stonehenge (drove past lots of times)
Blenheim Palace (guided tour - nice tea room)
Westminster (lived there for 4 years)
City of Bath (daughter loved the fudge shop)
Frontier of the Roman Empire (my father in law lives a short walk from part of Hardian's Wall)
Tower Of London (everyone's got to see the crown jewels sometime)
Canterbury (nice city - loads of antique shops)
Maritime Greenwich (went with my leather jacketed mates as a student, and a little kid saw us and ran off to his mum shouting "Are they REAL pirates?")
Dorset Coast (geography field trip aged 15)
Kew Gardens (everything you'd expect from the name)
Cornish Mining (including a trip inside a disused gold mine)

    4.

    Which Ones?
    Québec
    Rideau Canal
    Old Havana
Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (We technically drove by it, but I saw it!)

    What made the experience(s) memorable?
Tell us about a couple of these places. Share photos.
Quebec is simply beautiful, both the countryside and the cities/towns. It's home to some of the oldest settlements in Canada. The old parts of Montreal and Québec City are simply stunning. The province also makes a lot of maple syrup!

The Rideau Canal? I barely remember it. I believe I skated on it as a kid. It's the thing to do. I think I've only been to the nation's capital twice, and that was far too long ago.

Old Havana.... Oh Habana...! I love Havana. If you ever go to Cuba, you absolutely need to go to Havana. It will steal your heart and break it. I have some pictures we took on another computer. I'll upload some later.

Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca: We didn't get close to it, which is a shame. It wasn't on the itinerary. It's a 17th century castle built to defend Havana against pirates! How cool is that?

I need to travel more. Maybe that's why I'm not having kids.
