I live in Europe, so please bear with me :)

I have a question regarding white teeth. Does every one in the US feel that teeth can't bee white enough?

Or straight enough. A nation becoming devoid of unique smiles.

I got a good bit of advice the other day. If you drink red wine and your are worried about getting stains on your teeth, just drink a bottle of white before bed and it'll be fine.

I have no idea if that would actually work, but I'm reasonably sure that after downing two entire bottles of wine I wouldn't be particularly bothered about whether my teeth are stained.

Too many people want million-dollar smiles on their two-bit heads.

Too white looks unnatural to me. I like coffee too much to care. Red wine too.

There is little more unsettling than fake white teeth contrasted with a fake orange tan.

What's wrong with my slightly yellow teefs?

Seriously, I'd like more whitened teeth, but I don't like the dentist, and the whitening strips feel too weird in my mouth.
I'm considering a new toothpaste I saw in a commercial that is supposed to whiten your teeth.
I don't want snow white teeth, though. With the colas I drink, I probably don't need to work about that.

My dentist said my teeth were "really white". Isn't that the idea?
I use Crest Whitening strips a couple of times a year. As for non-straight unique teeth-having crooked teeth has given me TMJ that now, at my age, has deteriorated into arthritis. Don't knock the " nation becoming devoid of unique smiles." Being unique (because I was too stubborn to get braces) has caused me a LOT of pain.

Everyone who markets toothpaste, tooth whiteners and their followers go for the high beam smile, but I'd have to say they are the minority. That's kind of like asking if all Europeans refuse to bathe, just because I can smell all my French friends before I see them. :)

As for teeth themselves, they shouldn't be white. Tooth enamel is opaque (the outer layer) and Dentin is a yellowish tan (the inner layer), so teeth should have a slight yellowish tint to them.

I will say that it's likely a high percentage of Americans prefer whiter teeth because of the generic tea stained, snaggle toothed photo of some Brit that has become the poster child for Brittish dentistry or lack there of.

To me it's a matter of hygiene and appearance. I like a clean mouth. In others, I'm not a fan of the Super White smile, but I prefer it to a brown, snaggle toothed mouth full of chicklets. Just a glimpse of such a bacteria infested gapping maw is enough to make me shiver.

should have had orthodontics when i was young but my parents had five kids to support...

did my own thing through U of B dental school in my early thirties and glad i did...

    some people should not smile...

as for whiteness, as long as your teeth are clean and not diseased, smile, baby, smile...

I lucked out. I have good teeth from my father's side. No major dental work, no orthodontics, and I have fairly straight teeth. So do my siblings.

My hygienist recently asked me if I used whitening products. I think my Crest has "whitening" as one of the features, but I just use whatever my SO buys. I think it's Crest Complete.

If it makes my hygienist wonder whether I use whitening products, then it's good enough for me.

Enamel has a color and should be bright ivory-it is not colorless as you have alluded to. The thinner the enamel, the more dentin (which has yellow to tan color) shows through. It is why whiteners work just so far and why some people have naturally white appearing teeth.

    Not colorless, opaque.

  20. I find too-white teeth unsettling. They look unnatural to me.

My teeth are fairly white considering the coffee, red wine, and colas I drink. I try to take good care of my teeth by brushing and flossing daily, and that's all I would expect of anyone else.
