What scents do you really enjoy?

I'm sitting out back enjoying a fire. I started it with oak, but just threw on some cherry logs. What a tremendously pleasant scent that adds to the fire, nice and sweet.

There are some obvious smells we all enjoy, maybe a favorite food, perfume of a S/O, or things like vanilla or lavender that are easy to think of.

Are there any smells beyond the obvious that you enjoy, are calming, or bring back good memories?

I also like the scent of a fire. When I was a kid, we had some friends with a cabin in Canada we used to go visit in early summers. Nights would be cool, and we'd light a fire. They used mostly pine, but would sometimes throw in a little apple wood, and the scent was fantastic. A good fire still brings me back.

I really like the smell of rain. But it has to be cool rain-- like Spring or early Autumn-- not warm rain like in deep summer, or freezing cold rain like in late Fall or early Winter. Cool enough that it breaks the heat in the air, but gentle and warm enough that it makes everything green smell richer and deeper green.

The smell of old, well-cared-for wood furniture and cabinetry is a good one. I smell it in certain people's houses, or in certain synagogues and churches.

But my favorite smell, by far, that just makes my heart happy, is the scent of a large number of old books. That wonderful, dry, quiet, slightly musty smell of old paper, worn leather and cloth, and fading ink. You get it in really good libraries and used or antiquarian book stores-- your average neighborhood library won't have it, nor will a Barnes and Noble, the books are too new and recently made-- and sometimes in the home of someone special, or in the study of a rabbi or professor or suchlike. That smell just instantly speaks of knowledge, wit, love of the written word, and care for the arts of the author and the binder. That smell will always make me smile, always bring good memories to mind, always bring me a moment of peace.

It's definately not a smell for everyone; but there's a reassuring feeling that Molly has a great life that comes with the scent.

I love the smell of mountain creeks. The smell of green, cool, fresh, clean... I'm not as big of a fan of Lake smell. But creeks are such a pleasing olfactory experience in the mountains

Actually, this is my true kryptonite...I'm allergic to the mold from decomposing leaves...and I'm hacking like a 90 year smoker. :(
For 2 weeks around Late Nov-Early Dec...I'm a mess. Fortunately, the docs finally figured out a formula to reduce it, but it's still "there".
Having foliage decomposing all year-round in San Diego and no rain cycle really fucked up my lungs.

But I get what you're saying...my mother loves this too...and I respect it.

    -------------

On another note, I love the smell of the air before, during and after a rain...

Before a storm...the wind buildup and the electricity in the air.
During, especially Summer rains, the warm push from the water coming down.
After, the fresh air...cleared out of stuff, clean.

This is what repaired my lungs, when I got back to the East Coast. No shit.

I like it when I can first smell that bite of cold in the air that whispers autumn. Something inside of me then screams, "FOOTBALL!"
