What DID they expect?

  1. Penn State fans are all upset over the hiring of Bill O'Brien. Really? Just how many top line coaches want to take that program now? How could anyone connected to the past take that program into the future? Would you want your high school son to select Penn State unless there was a massive change? This is going to be a tough turn around for any coach to tackle let alone someone without a history of collegiate success. I just hope they give the new guy enough time to do it. While I can't think of anything exactly like this Baylor University hiring an unproven Scott Drew as head basketball coach is close. Look at that program now.

    Great article...

After listening to the students bitch about how Paterno was unfairly treated and now these knobheads bitching about O'Brien not having any PSU ties, I am going to become a fan of college football just so I can root against Penn State.

You never want to be the guy after the guy. You want to be the guy after the guy that was after the guy. :p

Aside from the scandal, which is a beyond huge factor, you have to consider that PSU has basically no notable football history outside of JoePa's reign. I mean, it was so freaking long that it is a notable history in and of itself. But any other large programs with legendary coaches at least have other successful (and less successful) coaches to be compared to aside from THE guy. At PSU it's going to be Uncle Joe and you. Not a situation any big name coach is going to want.

True this. I'm thinking O'Brien lasts 2 or 3 years and then somehow Pete Carroll ends up living in State College....

  8. Had Joe retired without disgrace, had this ugly affair not occurred I'm sure he would have had a say in his predecessor. In that case with that type of continuity I think many quality coaches would have been interested in this position. We'll never know, sadly.

    Rebuilding will take years.

I have a hard time believing that even in 2-3 years they will get someone with that big of a name. Obviously that's just my opinion, but I don't see PSU as an elite program going forward. A good, solid one probably. But not a top 15 on a list of desirable destinations for coaches.

It probably just depends on the coach.

There is just sooo much money involved in big-time college ball, and especially at this level. I mean, you're talking zillions if the program qualifies for a BCS bowl. It would certainly benefit Penn St. to rebuild as quickly as possible and try to put this horrible mess behind them.
