    Hello TFP Hive Mind,

I have been asked to source a service to host and stream/download video clips. The front end should be customizable (i.e. look like our business). The service should be able to send links to clients granting them access.

I would also like to be able to generate reports that will confirm:
    a) that someone sent a link has accessed a clip
    b) how much of the clip they watched (if they only watched 50% I want to know).

The volume of storage should be between 250GB and 500GB (more if possible).

I don't even know where to start on things like this and I think some of you here might be able to help (I hope!).

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers

This is an interesting question. The answer depends heavily on your budget.

You're sort of peripheral to my real area of expertise. I don't have a lot of direct experience with streaming so I don't know what exists in terms of turnkey solutions. Your storage capacity shouldn't be a major concern but bandwidth might be harder. Video streaming is bandwidth-heavy. You can mitigate it somewhat by using lower quality but going with a virtual hosted solution probably isn't going to cut it.

I'm a little surprised you don't have some nerd team to farm this out to. This kind of request is the sort of thing that I'd expect my boss to hand to me to research and come back with a solution.

My first stop would be somewhere like Limelight Networks to see if they can do what I need. This kind of thing takes a fair bit of expertise and specialized resources. If you can outsource that to people who actually know what they're doing, so much the better.

    EDIT:

This looks like it might be what you need. It's a good place to start, at any rate:

    Thanks, Martian.

We have an in house it dept. but they suck.

I am hiring an assistant soon, but need to get this sorted ASAP.

I will look into limelight. Thanks again.

Cool. I've indirectly done business with Limelight before, but not for video. The general impression of them I get is basically that this is a group of people who have their shit together.

I think so long as it's in your budget this will be the answer you're looking for.
