So this morning I thought, "I'd better wish Uncle Phil a happy Veteran's day!". Then it hit me. I miss him.

So instead I'd like to thank the other TFP Veterans. No matter when or what country, thank you for your acts of service and bravery. I am not a fighter, and am grateful to all who put themselves in harm's way in the cause of peace.

    Hats off to you today.

We call it Remembrance day, but the sentiment is the same (it is already the afternoon on 12/11 here), quite a lot of services around Australia at 11am yesterday. We have 2 such days in our calendar, the other (ANZAC day) commemorating the WWI landing by Australia and New Zealand at Gallipoli in Turkey, is by far the bigger day for us.

My dad is a Vietnam veteran, so these days are big in our family.

    They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old.
    Age shall not weary them
    nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
    and in the morning,
    we will remember them.

    Lest we forget.

  3. Said thanks to my dad, went to class. Got thanked by twenty people, which was annoying and slightly insulting. I say this because I never served. So to hear that on Veterans Day put me in the worst mood imaginable.

My husband gets a bit of that, too. He's got so much family that's military I guess people just forget he's not...

Looking at it from a totally nonmilitary background, I honestly feel the spouses and children of those who serve give so much more than they realize.

My dad always poo-poos it when ever he gets thanked for serving. He was in the National Guard in the '60s and calls himself a semi-veteran.
The family patriarch, my great-uncle flew Navy fighters in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, a several other lesser known places, He's a retired Navy Rear Admiral. He's probably the smartest man that I personally know, and has always been willing to share and to mentor me. If I am in any way astute, I owe that to him. Although married back in the forties, he is, I suspect, a closeted gay.
Nevertheless, they are quite close to each other. I thanked them both for their service, to the country.
I thanked them both for their service to me.

Some people don't realize that TAPS has lyrics. These seems like a good place to post them. There are several versions, known by different names, which is the original has been disputed, I don't claim to know. I do know that my wife has British music books that contain two different version, one for Naval deaths, & one for military deaths in general.

The version I'm posting posting is supposedly the original version as written by Horace Lorenzo Trim:

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
    All is well, safely rest
    God is nigh.

    Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
    From afar, drawing near
    Falls the night.

Thanks and praise for our days
Neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky
As we go, this we know
    God is nigh.

Went to The Concert For Valor in DC on Tuesday.

    Great time.
Nice to see all those vets there and the clips of inspiring ex-military.
