I heard this on the news, thought about you, Ralphie. Very glad that no one was hurt.

We had something similar here. The overpass didn't collapse, but the fire/heat did enough damage to cause it to be removed and rebuilt.

I've heard & read reports that the US is big trouble when our decades, sometimes centuries, old structures start failing. And very few politicians have the fortitude to use the T word when it comes to paying for it, especially for preventative measures.

"If it ain't broke (yet), don't (pay to) fix it."
"We'll cross that (collapsed) bridge when we come to it."

We the taxpayers, used in the general sense, are also to blame. Where do we want our tax dollars spent, on repairs to structures that seem to be OK, or new roads to ease traffic congestion? I recall one expert saying something like "No one cares (about infrastructure), until people start getting killed."

The part on either side of the collapsed portion must be replaced as well. and the same 3 parts on the opposite side of the interstate

The handful of times I've passed through Atlanta, the traffic was no fun. Can't imagine the ripple effect this will have all around the city. Yikes.

Very fortunate no one was hurt at least.

I still want to know how a fire can bring down a concrete bridge. How long could it have been burning for with fire crews nearby? And even with some plastic stored underneath, how hot could it get and how long was it heating the bridge? Was it thermal expansion that caused cracks and then the weight brought it down?

Does the steel portion of the structure bear more of the structural weight than most of us imagine? If so, the properties of the steel will change drastically once exposed to extreme temperature, especially if it's for long enough to heat the metal itself. It softens more than people think, and considering the distance suspended and the weight involved, I could see that causing the concrete to give way.

Someone with more civil engineering knowledge than I would have to explain, but that's what my steel knowledge and common sense tell me.

This is why I refused to drive over the I-10 Bridge in Lake Charles for an entire year. Some day that thing is going to go down and the lake will catch on fire from all of the pollution. It's a toss up of what will cause what.

A chair? There has to be a lot more to the cause of the fire, or more importantly--what was under the bridge that burned so large, so hot , and for so long?

We talked last night about the bridge MLK Jr marched and organized at. Was it on that I- 85?

I read some more about it. The local fire dept was on a different call at the time so there was a delayed response. And it looks like heat impacts concrete and steel in bridges a lot more than I would have expected.

I have a feeling that they didn't expect a bridge to collapse, but at least they knew enough to not be under it when it did collapse. So, maybe they did know.

One positive note is that Atlanta Hartsfield Airport is less than 10 miles away from where this happened and when the fire got out of control they sent the foam trucks up the interstate with a police escort to help with the fire.
