If memory serves, there are around here some few fans of one of the greatest mindfuck movies of all time: Fight Club. There are, amid the blood and psychosis, some compelling philosophical questions. And we're not talking about "as I pass, do I give you the ass or the crotch?" One of the pivotal moments of the film is when, just before running the car off the highway and down an embankment at over 80 mph, Tyler Durden asks, "what do you wish you would have done before you die?"

We can delve into the psychology of why you haven't done whatever your answer to the question is, if you want. Primarily, though, this will hopefully get us to examine ourselves, and evoke conversation about the things we want to do with our lives to leave any fingerprint on this world before we go.

Ignoring the fact that Fight Club is certainly NOT the greatest mindfuck movie of all time I'll bite on this.

When people ask me what I wish I had done with my life I don't have a response per say. My reasoning is simple. I don't feel like I should/need/have to put any fingerprint on the world. Don't get me wrong, there are times (my blog on 4.0 and some here is an example) when I've questioned whether I've made the right choices, if I'm heading the right way etc - but I really don't think I need to impact this "world" in any certain way.

I'm perfectly happy and content with what I have, who I am and where I've been. I think being here and living life to the enjoyment that you as an individual sees fit is enough of an impact on its own. I believe most people get caught up in the whole pseudo-mindset that there is some greater cause, some better ideal, some bigger picture that they end up forgetting themselves. If more people would actually live life to live instead of living life to die, the fingerprints would take care of themselves.

So basically, Tyler Durden can fuck off and do his thing, I'll do mine and you do yours. As long as we aren't hurting each other, I don't give a shit what makes you happy. Be happy and be free - there's no point in trying to dwell on what might be. What will be...has been.
