I just watched the first episode. BBC strikes again with an unexpected twist in the first episode. Anyone else enjoy the show?

I enjoyed Torchwood, though it was pretty inconsistent. Some episodes were fantastic while others were underwhelming. Still entertaining nonetheless.

Well crap. I do not like the fact I found out that this is part of the Doctor Who world. Fuckers.

Oh no, you didn't know that? Actually, that's pretty impressive - and speaks to Torchwood's success - that you had no idea it was a Doctor Who spinoff.

I take it you don't watch Doctor Who then? Might I suggest that this is a good excuse to start? ;) You can watch Torchwood on its own without watching Doctor Who, but it's nice to have the additional backstory about Captain Jack.

Nope not a single episode. What do I start off with then?

Don't worry about the old series Doctor Who. There are a ton of great stories there, but it's not necessary to get into it.

If you want the added benefit of knowing more about Captain Jack, you need to start from the beginning of the new series. That would be 2005's "Rose."

Love Torchwood, haven't seen the newest stuff though. I came into it from watching Doctor Who and liking Jack enough to wish he had his own show. Queue an IMDB search and I was pretty happy. I'm worried about how it will be in the US though. I liked the British vibe and most of the characters got killed off.

It's only in the US as a BBC show if I recall correctly. Not a redone one. I repeat, not a redone one.

Not redone, but the setting was supposed to move from Britain to the US. I'm hoping they don't take that too far.

I liked the british version as well - never watched doctor who so was all new to me. I've not seen the new US based version though - need to check that out.

The first three series of Torchwood were produced by BBC while the fourth was produced by Starz. Not a remake or anything though, just a shift in production company/locale.

I felt Torchwood season 1 was average, but the later seasons have vastly improved, especially season 4 and 5.

You don't need to have watched any Dr. Who to appreciate and enjoy Torchwood. A few of the cameos, villains and Jack's history (and references to it) might go over your head without having watched Dr. Who, but I can't think of anything important enough to require your viewing all of the new series just to get it if you're enjoying Torchwood anyway.

I would tend to agree that Torchwood was a good, but wildly inconsistently show. I guess is rather than was is more appropriate, but I enjoyed watching it. I haven't seen the most recently series, but I was quite fond of the last series.

I recommend watching Doctor Who so you can get addicted to the show as well as eventually finding out how Captain Jack became immortal.

Exactly. Doctor Who isn't necessary, but it's worth it.

TORCHWOOD is an anagram for DOCTOR WHO. Who's mind did I just blow?

I've seen all of Torchwood, but I think Doctor Who set my expectations too high. It has its moments, mostly in the first season and in the Children of Earth special, but when I look at The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Journey's End, Time of Angels, Vincent and the Doctor (my favorite ever), and A Christmas Carol, Torchwood comes off like the CSI: Miami of Doctor Who. And with the Miracle Day disaster, I'm not sure I'll watch it again.
