Today in Borla's neighborhood........I basically broke up a fight.

As a sequel my story of the dude peeing on my neighbor's house the other day.......gee, here goes the neighborhood!

I'm sitting in my home office working a couple minutes ago. All of a sudden I hear female screaming and yelling outside. "No!!! Nooooo!!! NOOOOO!!!" My office window looks out on the front yard, and I see my neighbor's French Mastiff and another dog going at each other. The girl next door (like sophomore in HS age, and probably not as big as the Mastiff) has her dog on the leash, and there is a Sheltie that a woman around 55-60 has, and they are out of control.

I dart out the door and sprint across my yard and pull the dogs apart. Both were fine, I don't think the Mastiff was biting the Sheltie, just trying to pin it. The woman starts screaming at the girl, and the girl's mom comes out and everyone just starts yelling. The woman yells at my neighbor that she shouldn't have such a big dog if she can't control it. My neighbor is yelling at her to just go and get away from her house. The girl is freaked out. And there I am standing in the middle (literally) of them.

The woman starts walking away, and gets about halfway across my property when she turns to stop and starts screaming about all the slobber her dog has on it now. My neighbor yells something back, and the woman starts coming back towards her, directly at me (I was still on the sidewalk, basically at the property border of my house and my neighbor's). I look at her and say "Will it really be worth it? If your dog is okay, and you aren't hurt, is it worth making this worse?" She just glares at me. They exchange a few more stupid things and she makes to come back and I repeat "Come on, let's just be done. Everyone is okay, just leave it alone." She yells at me "You better get her inside!!" Then I realize she thinks that I'm the neighbor's husband. I'm like "I'm just the neighbor, I ran out to try to keep everyone from getting hurt. That's all. Let's just be done here."

She finally walks away. My neighbor thanks me.

I really think if I hadn't been there to defuse it, it would've gotten ugly AGAIN between the lady walking her dog and my neighbor.

And now I have another "WWYD" story......

Would you have immediately ran out?

    Stopped to film for YouTube?

    Called the cops?

Ignored it and chalked it up as someone else's problem?

My immediate semi-smartass thought was "you should have filmed it to post online"
....but seriously I agree with what you did and would do the same.

I generally grab a bucket of water when 2 dogs are at it. In this case, I might have used it on the owner.

Yeah, doing what I do quells the bystander effect pretty seriously. I probably would have done something along the lines of what you did.

I had carried a taser for two years without deploying it. I'd love for the opportunity to say "taser taser." BZZZT!

So heroic and friendly! I like it!
Myself, I probably would have yelled, "Stop it!", and called for intervention if needed. I dont think I would be up to a mastiff physically, nor the girls emotionally. C'est la vie.

I would've attempted to break it up.

A related story, sort of: Back when we still had the pit bull mix (an 'older' puppy who had lived on the streets before showing up at our house) he and our yellow lab got into a "vicious fight" that went on for 3-4 minutes. After seeing the amount of teeth being shown and the amount of vicious growling, I expected both of them to have serious bloody wounds. No, they were both covered in dog slobber but the only blood was around their mouths where their snouts had collided during the "fight."

I had just let him outside in the backyard before this happened. He heard the commotion and came to that side of the fence. He was fine until the point where the other woman started yelling at me and took a few steps towards me. Then he started barking and acting like he was going to tear the fence down.

I have no experience breaking up dogs who are fighting. I am also very pregnant. I would have stood at the window and watched. I might have gone outside after the dogs were broken up and dealt with the human aftermath... But honestly probably not right now.

I definitely wouldn't expect, or want, a woman who was advanced in her pregnancy getting in the middle of either of those situations. You get a pass. ;) :D

Honestly, I always grab a bucket or a hose to break up fighting dogs. They both generally look at me with "WTF did you do that for" in their eyes.

Molly would have acted the same as Stanley. No big deal until she perceived a threat to me or Jackson.

Crappy owners are a totally different issue. Yes, I can control Molly; but if your off leash dog comes over and picks a fight, I'm likely to drop Molly's leash. Molly doesn't bite; but she will pin other dogs (particularly if they screw with Jackson).
