This is why I don't do Facebook.

    Link to story.

Ok, it's not really because I'm afraid of getting murdered that I don't have a Facebook page. And the vast majority of people aren't crazy enough to let it ruin their lives, let alone cause them to kill or be killed. And I'm sure there were additional motivators besides the defriending. But good grief lots of people let it take up far too much time and importance in their life.

And to kill a mother with her baby in her arms? :(

This is crazy ! I have a page but a lot of people would 'friend' anyone who asks - but still you would not expect some of those reactions
What is slightly disturbing is the fact you can now map where your photos were taken and where you are . I am not especially parinoid but why advertise you house is empty !

Damn, I de-friended about 250 people that I used to play Facebook games with, when I quit playing the games.
I hope no psycho virtual farmer sends his harvester after me!

    This is one effed-up story.

The problem isn't Facebook, which is just annoying. The problem is idiots who don't really have that firm a grasp of reality. If it weren't for the FB insults they're so incensed about, it would that your car clashes with their overalls or that you didn't wish them happy birthday last year.

when video games were in the process of taking over our childrens lives, mine was the generation that was playing those games. I personally, did not. in my late teens, and early 20's, my peers would ask why i didnt play those games, and i would reply, "i'd rather go do it for real." They usually looked at me like i was full of shit cause most of it was shoot em' up games, but i was serious. not about shooting things, but about living a real life. I raced MX, snowskied, camped, all sorts of fun stuff... if i did play a game, it was usually a game i enjoyed in real life...

the same type of thing is happening now with or social interactions. people are living their lives via the internet, and its not just sad, its disgusting. i have a page. it has pictures on it. i occasionally post. but my main purpose for having it is as a simple means to connect with geographically distant "real world" friends. i dont "make" friends on Facebook, i keep friends on facebook.

That being said, i dated a girl in high school that had a mother just a s nutty as she was... they both sent me friends requests within 3 days of each other. i denied the requests, and then became slightly worried that those to bat-shit crazy bitches, might figure it out and hunt me down, so they could wear my skin like a suit... they thankfully did not... but i was concerned...

Its not FB's fault, its crazy people. Guns dont kill people, people kill people. FB doesnt kill people, people kill people. What FB does, is provide an omnipresent medium for stalking that can neither be monitored nor secured, unless the stalker makes a move that allows it. once you friend someone, they can watch everything you choose to share, and you never know if their jerkin off about it or not... crazy people... eeeesh...

These sorts of news stories sadden me, but I fail to see what facebook has to do with any of the violence. Sure, facebook was the medium the person used to break off a friendship... but the very nature of humanity isn't being altered by social media. People are people, no matter how they choose to communicate.

Hopefully I was tongue-in-cheek enough in my OP to make it clear I don't think Facebook caused this murder. Obviously the people involved had much deeper issues.

I don't think the nature of humanity itself is incredibly altered by social media. But I do think the way people interact has profoundly changed due to it. Some things are definitely for the better, some for the worse. This unfortunately fell in the 'worse' catagory.

It would seem like stories like this are at the intersection of a 'culture of honor' and social media. Shame really, but not too awfully different from the dad killing Some Dude at the bar who called His Daughter a 'whore'. Such a waste.

Incidentally, one of my old acquaintances had posted some ridiculous rant about how everyone one on welfare does drugs and drives a Bentley, at which point I promptly left some facts in the comments. The details aren't terribly important, just trust that you would be hard-pressed to spew more vicious bile about someone and their family. You'd have thought I killed her dog and fed to her children. Then, of course, I was un-friended. Tough to say that I was disappointed though.

It made me terribly happy to have a place like TFP where you can still go to have a disagreement with somebody in a civil manner.

So, I head back over to facebook to find this:

It would seem there is more way than one to get in trouble. If you want to get the gist without waiting 9 minutes just watch the first and last 80 seconds.

Wow that's just too close to home. But it is frightening what people are capable of. It's interesting that this came up on TFP. I was on another forum earlier and someone posted this:

I have children, so I can sympathize with the dad, but clearly he helped cause the problem.

I saw that this morning too. I couldn't quite figure out what to make of it. He gets an "A" for effort, that's for sure. :p Some of the later stories I've seen say that he and her have both since laughed about it and she considered it a learning experience. I guess time will tell.

By the slight accent I'd say he's from Texas. They issue you a gun at birth there. :p

"A" for effort fer sure. YeeHaw! I have a hard time believing she's going to learn anything unless he makes good on his threat which if she can already laugh about it...

I see a lot of people upset about his using a gun, but if he had instead backed over it with a car I very much doubt we'd see any condemnation at all. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about the video (to me) is his apparent nonchalance regarding how many rounds were left.
