There is something new in the sky tonight

    I went outside with my 7x50 binoculars and was able to see it clearly (a telescope is definitely not necessary,) but you could easily mistake it for a dim star unless you knew you were looking in exactly the right place. Naked eye observation is out of the question for me, but if you're away from big cities you might be able to see it unaided.

    Astronomy is a field in which amateurs routinely if not frequently make new discoveries, and the fact that so many people are watching, recording, and communicating their results allows the collection of and reference to orders of magnitude more data than would otherwise be available to professionals and the community as a whole.

    From here, feel free to talk about anything from this nova to astronomy in general, and if you have a few minutes and a pair of binoculars, see if you can see the newest known object in the sky.
