Hell, people can't even remember from one year to the next...

The key is that war changed the dynamics of the world...setting up the scenario for the future.

People certainly remember that conflict, the term "Great War" only means one thing to me.

    Yikes.

Talking to my freshmen this year about the fallout from WWI leading into the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression was interesting. They were completely clueless, but they haven't covered that in their history classes yet.

My dad was born in 1921, raised on family stories about his relatives experiences in the trenches, and subsequently enlisted in the Navy for the duration of WW2 because he was not going to have anything to do with trenches or barbed wire. Maybe I read more as a lad than others around me, but there was never any confusion in my mind when hearing reference made to the Great War.

As for the OP and whatever nasty sets of mess that shit all over us in the future. Each horrific waste of life and treasure and possibility will be distinct from the other. The "winners" will have a consensus label. That label will clearly be separate from a century old conflict fought with conventional armies generally based in Western Europe. The name "The Great War" is safe, copy written, TM, whatever you like. There will always be wars. Never another Great War.

I found the quote rather poignant.

  7. The "War to End All War" was actually the war to start a century of endless war. Or, has there ever been a time of no war? Ever? Whether overt or covert, declared or not, civil, regional, world-wide, hot or cold, humanity is in a constant state of conflict.

The Great War was called that because, until World War II, there was no need to number them. Since then, all future sequels will likely be numbered, just like bad movie franchises.

Yes, but less intense and less deadly than it once was.

The last fifty years (1963-2013) has been the most peaceful half-century in all of human history, if you measure it by the percentage of world population who died violently during that time.
