The 5 People You Would Like To Have Lunch With

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by ASU2003, Jun 30, 2013.

  1. ASU2003

    ASU2003 Very Tilted

    Location:
    Where ever I roam
    1. Sir Patrick Stewart
    2. Neil DeGrasse Tyson
    3. Elon Musk
    4. Barrack Obama
    5. Bill Clinton

It can be a simple list, or you can explain why you would like to meet them. What would you talk about?

The first two on my list would be fun to talk with about space and science. I would like to ask Elon about entrepreneurship and electric cars. And the two Presidents it would be about politics and how things work.

  2. Levite

    Levite Levitical Yet Funky

    Location:
    The Windy City
    In no particular order:

    1. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. He translated the Talmud into Hebrew from Aramaic, and has written several excellent books on Jewish mysticism, as well as numerous works on Talmud and Jewish Law. Although he is ultra-Orthodox, he is renowned for being open and friendly to all students, whether Orthodox or not. He is arguably the greatest Talmud scholar living, and he could probably teach me more in one lunch than I learned in two years of rabbinical school-- and I learned a lot in rabbinical school.

    2. Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Chronicles novels, because I love the stories, and I think it'd be fun to discuss magic, the paranormal, and mythology with him.

    3. Joss Whedon. Maybe self-explanatory; but I am a huge fan of his work, and love his writing style and eclectic creativty.

    4. Aaron Sorkin. Also maybe self-explanatory; also a huge fan of his work, and his politics. He might be the most intelligent writer in Hollywood.

    5. Neil Patrick Harris. He just seems like he would be incredibly fun to hang out with, and I have crazy respect for anyone that broadly and deeply talented.

  3. Raghnar

    Raghnar Getting Tilted

    Non- Work related:
1- Barack Obama. Simply too much Charisma.
2- Bill Gates. How to become a legend of informatics in and spend rest of your life on a charitable fundation.
3- Sylvain Chomet. Very Big Fan.
4- Alex Grothendiek. Legendary Mathematician. WWII refugee. Spent most of his life as a recluse after Fields Medal. No one knows where he is right now.
    5- Christopher Nolan. Big fan.

    Work-Related:
1- Freeman Dyson. Legendary quantum physicist. Versatile to the point of crazyness, my reference as a scientist.
2- Phil Anderson. Nobel Prize for collective phenomena and superconductor studies. One of the deepest thinker of our time. Had an email exchange with him once.
3- Steve Weinberg. More or less inventor of modern QCD theory, with work and a bunch of different theoretical physics work.
4- Elon Musk. Searching for job outside academia :p
    5- Larry Page. ibidem.

Frankly, I liked the list ASU2003 came up with.

    But just for fun
    • Robin Williams
    • Eddie Izzard
    • Craig Furgeson
    • Chris Rock
    • Lewis Black
I'd be exhausted after, but it would be an experience. :D

On second thought, maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea after all...

Whenever I think about romeo dallaire I wonder what it would be like to be him and I'm not able to imagine it. Then I start to get a little angry. I don't think I will ever resolve the trauma of even learning about Rwanda. From what I understand about the man, he drags around a long, heavy shadow of regret. I feel for him.
