Superhero Personae

Part of the appeal of the superhero has always been that we can see facets of ouselves in their characters. As the genre continues to evolve and our heroes become more....well, human, that line between us and them becomes ever thinner.

So, I put it to you, with what superhero and/or villain do you most closely identify, and why? Any universe, any timeline, any point in history (considering many heroes' stories have been revised as time moves on).

For me, it's The Tick. I may not look as good in blue, but his decidedly Quixotic view of the world is very much my speed, seeking adventure and excitement in otherwise mundane events (i.e., a clogged toilet becoming a foe to be vanquished).

The Maxx is one to whom I can relate. A man between two world, this earth and Pangaea, which he knows as The Outback, a place of fantastic creatures and landscapes. While everyone around him sees this world as real and considers his world imaginary, he deems The Outback more real than the world in which we walk. Where this side sees a social worker who's emotionally closed off because of some childhood trauma, the Maxx sees the Jungle Queen trapped inside a tower in need of rescue; over here, he's a bum, no money, no home, but in the Outback, he's the mighty and unstoppable hero.

Two-Face will probably always be my favourite villain. Typically a multiple-personality, though Aaron Eckhart's portrayal was dynamic and chilling, his physical disfigurement allowed his second personality to come to the surface; it's why he often refers to himself as 'we' or 'us'. One might say that the duality of the character is in itself a duality, the man at one with yet constantly wrestling with his shadow self, the light and dark sides of the man in perpetual conflict. I have, for most of my life, felt this shadow self trying to break out and cause a little chaos; I'm frequently fighting myself for control.

So, what about you?

 

As my avatar shows. I would be the Blue Lantern. I would to bring the power of hope to those around me. I believe that no situation is hopeless. anything can be overcome if you believe. So what better super hero to be then one that is fueled by the power of Hope in the universe?

 

Thor, because I feel like I channel a pantheon of gods when I do what I do. In real terms, it's my UNconscious mind that is my real strength. As a conscious entity, i am pretty weak.

Slaine, again, because, though well trained, his core strengh is in being able to release what is Primal.

Batman, because I am fuelled by darkness. Pain is the foundation of 99% of my learnings, skills and motivations.

Green Lantern, because his ability to morph reality was limited only by his imagination and his will. Since the age of 11, I looked to him as a role model for creativity under pressure in the service of Good.

Judge Dredd, he has no special powers, but, whilst not being super-HUMAN, he has become super-EGO ... transcending individual identity: "I AM the LAW" ... He is The Universal Made Flesh ... A paragon of humility, a living sacrifice who, in the Death of his ego, becomes transfigured by the principle he lives by. He represents my aspirations and commitment to Higher Purpose. If Jesus had read Judge Dredd, the Lord's Prayer would have had different words.

 

According to Which Superhero are you? Quiz, I am most like Robin or Superman 95%. I had thought of Superman before the quiz. Robin is just too young and "holy smokes batman" for me. Superman is the calmer & gentler of the two, goes out of his way to help people, sometimes a little too trusting, and learned that 'saving the world' means minimal if you lose track of those close to you. He is probably the one I most closely identify with. Wonder woman was the other I thought of, with her lasso of truth, but I do think she is much more outgoing than I am. I tend to be more quiet and reserved most of the time.

Well Well ... GL came out top. Interesting. Apart from Thor, his were the stories I was most keen to read and to keep up to date with.
If it weren't for his lack of Dark Side, I'd have chosen Superman as my favourite, but if no dark side, then definitely not me.

I have no idea who these blue and green lantern people are. The names just sound familiar from "Big Bang Theory." Do they glow? My morning cartoons long ago just included Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and sometimes one that liked to swim.

 

Not many people know who they are, if they do. They never heard of the Blue Lantern. But I identify more with them then the more famous Green Lanterns. do a wiki search on them for the whole quick run down.
