Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Couture, Crews, Rourke!

When I first heard The Expendables (2010) was actually a thing, two sides of me responded. 1) The oft-dormant manly man in me got a healthy shot of a chemical admixture of testosterone and adrenaline, 2) the artsy-fartsy side of me rolled his eyes and thought, Oh, fuck, this is going to be a disaster.

But then I remembered that I actually liked Rambo (2008) and that I heard Rocky Balboa (2006) was received with both critical acclaim and financial success. So I looked forward to The Expendables, and I was pleased with the result. I wasn't the only one. The film marked Stallone's most successful opening weekend in his storied career.

There are a few reasons for this: '80s action film nostalgia, aging-but-still-got-it-ism, high production values (things go asplode!), unconventional cast (NFL players, MMA fighters, WWE wrestlers), a good balance of action and comedy, and kick-ass cameos (also nostalgic). I mean, c'mon. Schwarzenegger was in it (albeit briefly)! It had enough ingredients to turn anyone into a kid in a candy shop, and it actually worked!

Guess what? The Expendables 2 is coming out this summer! Feast your eyes on the trailer.

Before you think you've lost your mind: Yes, the new film has JCVD! Yes, it has Chuck Norris! Yes, there's more Ah-nold!

Guess what else? It's meant to be a franchise, with the third installment already in talks. They might even add Steven Seagal!

What do you think of this franchise? Have you bought into it?

I have, and now I'm thinking of picking up the first film on Blu-ray before I see the new one in theatres.

    Basically...

It's like every childhood dream come true... in 90 minutes of pointless explosions and bad one-liners.

You put the old titans of action in with the new faces of the genre and you've got a real crowd pleaser.

The ridiculous special effects, the cheesy bad guys and the endless supply of modern weapons? Win.

Schwarzenegger ripping the door off the Smart Car has already sold me my ticket.

This film makes me want to start taking HGH and do stupid things to my body.

I'm very pleased they managed to fit JCVD and his big ego into this installment. Apparently, they failed to get him in the first one because he complained his proposed role was too small.

Maybe he realized he was missing out on the big cash in his ilk are getting. Or maybe they figured giving him the lead villain role makes everyone happy.

"We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one." —Stallone

Oooh, winner on two counts! It has every cheesy cliched action film element to perfection if that trailer is any indication which makes it great for viewing when you are in the mood for that, and will be excellent fodder for Mike Nelson & the guys at Rifftrax when the DVD is released.

I just really hope they don't put Seagal in it.
Because then I have two choices.
I can either keep my pride in having avoided every movie that idiot has made
or suck it up and lose that point of pride.
    Sad panda.

Seagal has some "I'm a reality star cop" show on the Tee Vee and it's apparently way popular down here. I watched 5mins of it once. My head still fucking hurts. I was a parole officer, does not translate in Spanish. Here you're either in jail/prison or you're not. So often I just end up telling people I worked with the police. "So you were a cop?" "No I was a blah, blah, blah..." Confused looks. "Yeah, Ok I was a cop." Anyway those conversations have very often lead to "Ok, so you were just like Steven Seagal?" "Umm, no... fuck no. Gawd no... just no."

Same reason he turned down being the alien hunter in Predator with Schwarzenegger. His big ass ego.

  12. Two thumbs up... I'm all for it.
Loved the first movie, will see the second... and barring that doesn't disappoint, (obviously) see the 3rd.

I liked "Rocky Balboa," and "Rambo"...
I LOVE JCVD in "Bloodsport" and "Kickboxer"...
I LOVE Segal in some of his older flix, up to the Under Siege 2-part.

    Yay! Movies.

I think Randy Couture was underrated in the first one.
I'm looking forward to the second very much.

If it isn't blatantly obvious, I'll be the guy in the third row calling out all the guns used in the film as they appear and are used to great "uh, it-doesn't-really-do-that" effect. The first movie had me creaming my panties at all the pure '80s gun nonsense. It was like Dolph's Men of War all over again.

I mean, just look at that picture. Streetsweeper variant, Carl Gustaf, various grenades, belt of shotgun shells, some generic pistol in a $2 holster.

The Expendables series has each character decked out with an impossible array of "you'd-never-use-that-in-real-life" gear.

I want me some hypermasculine escapist ultraviolence with outta control hardware... and I get it.

    AMERICA!
