I got a root canal today and the dentist warned me that my jaw will likely be sore for 4 to 7 days. I need some suggestions for soft food. So far, I have mashed potatoes, soup, beans, and pasta. More would be appreciated.

I was thinking that I should get makings for pudding. There is nothing I love more than homemade pudding.

I really like me some strawberry oatmeal. Back in Australia I'd have it at least once a month.

If you can find the pre-mixed strawberry oatmeal, that's best. Otherwise get yourself some standard oatmeal and throw in quartered strawberries.

Simmer the mixture in milk for i-dont-know-how-long (should be stated on the oatmeal package), and 5 minutes before it's done throw in some tablespoons of sugar (up to your taste) and some vanilla extract (concentrated).

    Yum.

I will second the vote for Congee.

You might also consider making savory oatmeal. Just make oatmeal the way you normally would but dress it with soy sauce and spring onions instead. Seriously good.

    Also, creamy polenta.

You could also make shredded chicken/pork/beef to dress any of the above. Just make sure the shreds are really small.

I would have never thought of savory oatmeal until I had steel cut oats.

I will skip the meat personally, but these suggestions are great. I love polenta.

  13. 4-7 days? Wow, that's a long time. I've had a few root canals but never experienced more than one day's worth of discomfort and that was due to an abcess.

If you're going to be doing soft foods for that long, definitely find some nutrition drinks. The only one that comes to mind at present is Ensure It is for older people but I'm sure it would have value for you.

    Good luck on the tooth.

I can't believe the thread got this far with no mention of Jello or PB&J.

I went through something similar once...

I can't stand to change what I enjoy eating, so I ended up blending all of my food together with an immersion blender. Worked for most items, had to add liquid (usually water) to some. Some things tasted like garbage...others...well... :)

Trying to eat pb&j was what motivated this thread.

I picked up a packet of this at the grocery store:

If you can find it, try it. It's really good and dead simple to make. You literally just pour boiling water over it and stir.

The last time I had dental surgery, I lived on scrambled eggs, butterscotch pudding, and applesauce for a couple days. I couldn't do anything really hot or really cold, so soup and ice cream were out (although if I let the soup cool down to lukewarm, I could eat it.) Mashed bananas were also a favorite of mine.
