DAKA DOING VERY NICELY, THANK YOU

I recently bought a SodaStream soda maker...love the stuff, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for flavoring the soda...I'm looking for a slight flavor....not as heavy as regular soda.

    Why limit yourself to sodas?
We're hoping for a SodaStream for Christmas. In addition to the obvious I can't wait to carbonate grapes, or infuse them with other flavors. There is a lot of cool experimentation to be done here :)
(I also have plans for building a DIY heated immersion circulator to make perfect steaks and special eggs)

A tad more on topic: How about using fruit juice/essence/bits to make flavored sparkling water?

I've used Torani syrups. They seem expensive, but a bottle lasts me a long time.

Well, I havent tried this myself, but heard it on a cookery show.

If you get decent (ie $10) french white wine, and juice it with the sodastream machine, it is identical to champagne in taste
(or at least on the show they had a blind taste test and three experts couldnt agree the difference between it and a $100 bottle of real champagne)

On the other hand, NEVER try to make fizzy milk. I had a sodastream machine when I was a kid and I tried that and it basically exploded (not with fire, but the milk went over a 20 foot radius and covered every wall and the release arm on the machine broke)

I made fizzy coffee once in the early 80's.

    Not a great success...

Which version did you buy? I've been looking into these. Glad to hear you love it. I kinda like the looks of the Genesis.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

There was a local company that was going to take over the world selling fizzy milk.
This was a few years back. This is dairy country so folks got pretty excited.
I'm not sure they sold even a single drop. Someone else owns the building now.

    Let's see...

Dissolved CO2 lowers the pH, and the acidity curdles the milk, so you get fizzy cheese.

My daughter saw the sodastream advertised on tv the other day and wanted one. I'm kinda hesitant to get one cause I wasnt sure if it was really a good thing. However, from what ive read in this thread, it seems to be a good product.

From what I've heard, the product is good, the CO2 refills are what seems to be the issue based on cost and shipping/pickup availability.

They are good, but more expensive than shop bought soda (unless you drink litres every day) once you factor in the cost of the equipment.

I just buy carbonated water and mix it with syrup.

    Further adventures with SODA SYPHON
I needed to "fizz" a bottle of water just now, so I decided that I'd add the leftover "juice" from a small bottle of DEL MONTE SUNFRESH CITRUS SALAD...it's basicaly about 2 oz of sugar water that the grapefruit sections sit in...
SURPRISE even though it was below the "fill line" on the container it practically exploded...it was shooting out all over the place....
NOTE TO SELF...DO NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE WATER BEFORE FIZZING IT... Next time I'll add after...

My mom has a Soda Stream, which she loves. But then, she will drink seltzer water to the exclusion of all other liquids, if possible. I am not medically permitted much indulgence in fizzy drinks (a shame, because I adore them-- I used to be a HUGE diet Coke addict), but if I could still have them, we would own a Soda Stream in this house.

I have some friends with one, and they have experimented with various syrups, juices, and whatnot. I think in the end, they kept it pretty simple, either with the flavor packets the company sells, or with other similar DIY soda flavoring packets, or they made seltzer and then flavored that (they made me an awesome egg cream last time I visited them). They also mentioned the fizzy wine trick-- said it saved them a bundle last party they had, and everyone was just as happy with the results.

DOes it actually create a solid cheese at the bottom of the bottle? How does it taste?

Put a bit of vinegar into a glass of milk, to experience the horror of acidified milk...
