Seriously, why does he do this?

EVERY freaking time he lays down on the couch, he puts his head on the pillow. We have a queen sized bed in the guest bedroom that he usually sleeps in (when we can keep him from sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night, and yes, he does sneak), and he always puts his head at the head of the bed on a pillow. If there is a pillow on the floor he'll lay on the floor with his head on the pillow.

I have never in my life seen a dog that virtually always insists on using a pillow. I have no idea what compels him to do so other than that he is one of the most observant dogs I've ever seen, I think he's just mimicking us.

    'Cause he's such a cuddly-wuddly cutie pie.

    Ahem.

Growing up, I had a dog that not only slept on a pillow, but also under the covers. She was awesome :)

Benjen tends to knock pillows to the ground--as if he can't be bothered with the fluff. Leia likes to lay on pillows, though.

That is also the answer to why dogs lick themselves.

One of my cats likes to have her head on my pillow when we're sleeping, and both of them like to be under the covers. I can't explain it either. I just think it is cute.

  7. You are his pack leader, his champion at tossing balls etc - I would pity him if you were a ballet dancer - little sweetie is lovely, but if he managed to spin around on one rear leg whilst holding his fore paws over his head - I would fear for his safety and would have to suggest you hang up your tights. Why put your head on a pillow - because its more comfortable and the rest of his pack have shown him this. He looks so sad. Is that because you have not put a fresh pillow case on it for him, the poor malnourished little lad. Do you know where else you see those eyes? On the posters of starving third world children. If he has the choice, would he put his head on your lap instead?

I, like a few above have mentioned, had a dog (a chihuahua) that needed to be under the covers to sleep. My pet rabbit now has gotten to the point that when I am in my recliner, he jumps up and digs at the blanket on me making a nest on my stomach and laying there. He'll get up to sniff my face if I stop petting him or nip at my hand if I stop.

I have come to the conclusion that pets, no matter what species (mostly mammal) value their owners and "family" and want to know they are loved also. Hence the dog/cat/animal that needs to sleep with you or be close to you. Pets are an extension of ourselves really. Why do we have them? For the love and companionship they provide us.

So what is the big deal he wants a pillow. As Chinese said he sees the rest of the family doing it and soooo. My suggestion would be if you don't want him on your pillows, buy him his own pillow or doggy bed.

Yes, aside from his normal dog food, just yesterday he got the trimmings off of three steaks, chewed a good bit of marrow out of a cow femur, and went for a ride in the car, during which we went through the drive-thru of the bank and he got several treats from the bank teller. He is hideously malnurished and mistreated. ;)

He has two giant dog beds. They stay on the floor in my office in a pile. The only time he'll make use of them is when he is frustrated after being told "no" or "not for you" when he wants something. In which case he will go grab one of his beds, drag it into the middle of the living room floor (always the living room for maximum visibility I guess) and hump it furiously. He never humps anything except his beds, but he only uses them to hump. :p

I think someone is feeling a little hurt because his dog prefers humping the dog bed over his master's leg.

Your dog is a real beauty.
My less-beautiful though truly lovable dog does what yours does with the pillows. We assume he just likes to be comfortable. He is the source of endless amusement when he must fix the pillows (OUR pillows) just right. He has no desire to jump on the bed so as long as my face doesn't have to rest where his bum was, his pillow-love doesn't bother me.

Stanley has a big ol' head. And I'm sure he likes to be comfortable. I bet he breathes a little easier when he's laying down (not on his side) if his head is propped up a little better. And his humans are kind enough to have pillows laying around for him, so why not?
Vex had to sleep with me every night when we were in the other apartment and preferred to be on a pillow next to my side, between my kidney and the pillow itself, actually. And under the covers. But he is a Strange Animal. Max must sleep directly on me when we're first going to sleep and gets a little huffy if you slide him off. Animals are very particular.

i think that was the dog trying to say "this picture is going to end up on the internet, isn't it?"

  14. It probably takes some effort keeping those jowls off the floor - I think he is resting his cheeks.

    Don't see Borla's issue there.

At least his dog doesn't sleep like my fiancée's dog does:

  16. When I used to foster and rehome dogs, I taught them a little trick. They would all roll over, chest up, legs akimbo - in response to the command/phrase 'show us yer willy'.

M0lly also prefers a pillow. She seems to snore less and presumably breathes better when she has one.

For better or worse, she also tends to raid the laundry and cuddle up with a pair of my dirty socks or a well used T shirt.

  18. Because your scent is on them. Have been told that if you board your dog to include a T shirt that you have slept in. Your dog will find that comforting during the separation.
