What adult made a lasting impression on your life as a child or young adult?

A teacher, celebrity, friend of the family?

I keep thinking about a certain member of our forum who is actively involved in her nieces' lives. And I keep thinking how awesome and special it is that they have her. Surely everyone has someone who made them feel special and loved.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I was fortunate in that there were many.
I have very fond memories of my mother's cousin, and some of my parents friends as well who we loved being around. Some of those bonds were really strong because we took vacations together.
And if you mention my kindergarten teacher even to this day I will light up.

I am who I am because of this woman.

She taught me that it's okay to be personal with your students. It's okay to sit next to them to help them. It's okay to be on their level. In fact, it's better if you are. Not everyone needs to be at the front of the classroom. It's better to be a guide and a resource, and to let kids learn by doing. .

I do what I do because of her. I'm also happy to say we're still in touch.

No one person other than my mother and her parents.

Although my Grandfather's standards of excellence stay with me to this day.
Not the discipline, I'm very indulgent and a procrastinator, at least in my personal life.

But at work, I'm the opposite...and I HATE being wrong...my expectations of myself are beyond what most would suspect and I beat myself up over it.
And in all life, my honor and integrity on how I treat others is significant. (there's my Mother in there too...)

My best friend's parents had a substantial impact on my life. They are still quite close to me. Since my mom passed, they call themselves the "spare grandparents". I like that designation.

My mother, for helping me learn to appreciate reading at a young age. She left HS to get married, and didn't get her GED until around 16 years later.

Mrs. Carter, one of my English teachers in HS, because she actually cared about prose, and her student's writing. My other English teachers were "by the book."

Mr. Godwin, one of my HS history teachers. He actually listened to us, and encouraged discussions that weren't "by the book." And he stated that he chose to teach in the public school system, knowing that would mean living frugally.

There have been a few people that have been a large influence on my life. One notable one is M Campetelli. He was my grade 9 and grade 13 French teacher. As a teacher he was excellent. As someone who offered great advice on how to live life and what to expect from University, he was gold dust. On top of this, he organized the trip to Paris I went on in grade 10. It was my first time going abroad. It was a great example on how to travel.

He died when I was in second year university. I wish he was still alive so I could catch up with him again and thank him.
