I think I'm contractually obligated to say lab mix.

But I grew up with bull mastiffs and I will always be fond of them.

    I need pictures of Stanley.

    Bull Mastiff for obvious reasons.

We did a lot of research prior to choosing a Bull Mastiff. I wanted a Mastiff originally. My wife wanted something a little smaller. The more we read about the general personality traits of Bull Mastiffs the more we thought it would be a good fit.

Big, strong, loyal, non-aggressive, quiet, moderate to low exercise needs, suitable for being in the house most of the day. Much smarter than I expected too, whether that is genetic lottery or the very vigorous mental exercise we tried to give him from early puppyhood on. If I could clone him and have 1-2 of him at all times the rest of my life I would.

Oh...wow. Almost all of them, haha. My dogs are both mutts (lab/chow mix, Australian Cattle Dog/catahoula mix as best we can tell), and I gotta say, I'll probably go with mixed breeds for the rest of...well, forever, or until I stop having dogs.

But there are a few specific breeds I'm fond of. I like BIG dogs. It surprises me when people say my dogs are big, because they look downright tiny compared to say, an Irish wolfhound:

Speaking of wolfhounds...I don't like the standard haircut for Russian wolfhounds (aka Borzoi), but I adore their faces.

    [IMG][IMG]

Wiki says, "...and as adults they are decorative couch potatoes with remarkably gracious house manners," which always makes me giggle.

Greyhounds are very similar, without the goofy haircut-

They are seriously the chillest dogs I've ever met. "45 mph couch potatoes," as it were. Assuming nothing falls into our laps (which has been known to happen), I'd like our next dog to be a rescued/retired greyhound.

And it isn't a breed I would've even considered in the past (bit too needy & energetic), but I've met a couple of wire fox terrier mixes lately that are just totally sweet and adorable:

Basically, if it has four legs and a tail, I'm going to love it and make friends.

I cannot WAIT for our Rhodie when we get out west. I'm on tapatalk, so it's hard to figure out how to attach Google photos. But, we're looking for a dog that can hang when we're camping and hiking, put up with the cats, is intelligent and can learn well. They're gorgeous and muscular and low stinkage... I have allergies to small dogs, especially Yorkies and longer-haired Doxies.
I love dogs, but I hate, hate, hate being licked. So it's a challenge for me. Their tongues are too smooth, ha ha ha.

I think hot dogs are definitely superior.;) They have a pleasant smell, they don't bark. They don't pee on the carpet or eat the kitty biscuits out of the litter box. They feed you instead of the other way around. They are loved by small children and baseball fans. They don't shed or require licenses, shots, or liability insurance.

    Best breeds: Nathan's, Cetak's, Hebrew National.:p

I am all about the mutts and cross breeds.

I've never had a purebred and wouldn't look for one when I've had a choice.

Go figure, I'm partial to Newfies.

Smaller dogs are considered prey where I live. Newfs are problem solving smart, love kids, and adapt really well to a weekend warrior type like myself. Molly is fine snoring on a sofa while I code routers and she'll hop up to do a 20 mile hike any time I want. Her coat is up to anything Colorado can dish up and she swims like a fish.

Molly now and her baby picture:

I'm 59 and Molly is 8. I'm not sure if another dog is in my future; but if it is, nothing other than a female Newf will do.

No favorite, although lately I've had a few beagles and beagle mixes.

But I do like smart dogs, very smart ones.

Large--Labradors. Smart, loyal, and large enough to give lowlifes second thoughts. Once they get over the everything-is-a-chew-toy stage.

Small--Miniature Dachshunds. Smart & loyal, and they don't have the nervous nature of many small canine breeds.

I love Retrievers, and Labradors. I love their nature and how caring and intelligent they are. I'm not a fan of small dogs, my sister has a yorkie and shes cute but that's it. I love larger dogs. I also like the look of German Sheppards.

Most small dogs are too nervous for my taste. Miniature Dachshunds don't seem to know that they're small dogs. Our miniature Sheltie (not sure if such a breed exists, or if ours just happens to be half-sized) isn't bad for a small dog, but our MD is fearless.

I should add Border Collie for a mid-sized dog. Very smart, with a great temperament. Ours used to herd the two kittens, and sneak-up on squirrels like a cat, rather than charge them like a dog.

    Cat's are definitely smarter.

Proof: Has anyone ever seen a cat eat dog shit?

No, but none of our cats has ever scared away the Jehovah's Witnesses like our dogs have.
