QOTD #59: Do you like your washer/dryer?

    Do you like your washer/dryer?
    Is yours HE or standard?
What special features do you use on your washing machine?

We are looking into getting a new washer, since this morning ours was deemed irreparable by our home warranty company (busted transmission leaked all over other parts and burned out the motor, among other things). They're only giving us $350 toward a new washer, which is a shame because it's not enough to purchase a new one and not enough to do the costly repairs on our current machine. So either we're going to purchase a refurbished washer or we're going to dip into savings for something we actually like.

I bought a used washing machine for $150. It's certainly not fancy but it gets the job done.

I dry clothes by hanging them. Also not fancy. Also gets the job done. Drying stuff in the winter is a bit of a pain because it takes about a day, but apart from that it works just fine.

I'm not really fussed so long as I can put dirty clothes in and they come out clean.

We just had to replace our dryer. I do like the new one MUCH better than the older one. The older one was a contractor/builder grade one that was installed when the house was built and was very basic. We replaced it with an HE unit that has many features that help it be both more efficient and that prevent wrinkles.

We had replaced the washer 4-5 years ago, also with an HE unit. It performs well too.

The most important thing to me, aside from the obvious part of getting clothes clean and getting them dry, is to keep them from being wrinkled and keep from being wasteful. So if an HE unit can also do that, I'm happy.

As a sidenote, I do a lot of work with major manufacturers, including appliance manufacturers. I'm in appliance manufacturing plants 45+ times a year on average. Since this directly impacts my career, I'm a big proponent of domestically manufactured brands/models. And though my company supplies most of the domestic market directly or indirectly, I am personally a big fan of Whirlpool manufactured units, especially their mid and higher tier brands/models.

We have a front-loading Samsung that my wife likes just fine. I'm not allowed to use it, toss a red T-shirt in with her underwear one time ...

Front loaders are slow, but ours seems to do a very nice job, while being gentle on our clothes.

Mine are nothing special. If I'm not mistaken I paid $150 for both of them. There not the HE, just standard. I've never had great luck with washers. I bought a new one about 10 years ago and after about a week it started leaking, called them and they said it was about a week before the could come. I was pissed, but I waited a week. He came and fixed it then 2 weeks later it did it again, so I called and they told me it would be 2 weeks before they could come out. I got mad hung up on them, then i remember I picked up the washer. And threw it out the back door they were French doors. Full of water and clothes. I called them back and told them to come get the piece of shit. Needless to say they did. My wife wasn't happy cause She had to pick up clothes in the back yard.

Every appliance we have purchased has been a Whirlpool. They're sturdy.

I bought the HE versions a few years ago when I moved into a house. I don't use them nearly as much as the average family. I might use mine 30-40 times a year, a few loads every other month. I have enough clothes to survive for weeks though.

I have a love affair with my washer and dryer. My hubs bought them while I was in LA. They're stackable, HE front-loaders because we have limited space. LG has awesome technology and makes it completely painless. Things are cycled through exactly as I wanted them to be, and exactly how dry I want them to be. Nothing is shrunken, nothing needs to have more time, unless I did something wrong. I adore them.

@Borla, thank you so much for your help with this process! He has really helped me figure out what we need (via messaging). This whole washer dying thing was super worrying, but it looks like we've figured it out.

Great to hear. Glad to be of assistance. All I ask is that you randomly let @ZombieSquirrel know how awesome I am when she talks trash. :p

Our are okay. They do what they need to. I'd really like a front-loading washer, but that's a little out of our budget.

...just had to go check the brand. Roper by Whirlpool. They were a gift from Eden's parents when we (mostly he) moved.

Have to use the one for the apartment building and they are awful.
Really hate them, clothes don't come clean, they break on a regular basis, down a steep flight of concrete stairs, every bad thing you can think of.

I had a nice set of HE Whirlpool front-loaders in my Boston house, but decided it wasn't worth moving them halfway across the country. An older set of Kenmores came with the house here in Lincoln. Just standard machines that get the job done. Replaced the electric dryer last year after the bearings and motor gave up. Had piping run for gas, which costs about half as much to run as electric.

We have a set that are aging and need to be replaced. I bought them about 9 years ago used from my old roommate. Luckily, my neighbourhood has a good turnover of people moving out of the country and there are always appliances up for sale.

I need to keep my eyes open for the next good one and snap it up.

  19. Ours sings. A lot of our appliances sing. I think it's a Japanese thing.
