Borla thought I needed to create a thread related to a recent blog entry.

I am taking a week off from work in two weeks and I have no idea where to visit so I am asking for your help. Provide a city in the United States or Canada that you think would be great for me to visit. Once we have a list of cities, we can vote on which city would be the best.

I don't know what you've seen already or not.
These you want to go to at least once.

    NYC
    Washington DC
    New Orleans
    San Diego
San Francisco (and while you're there...take a quite in land ride to Yosemite...just awesome)

I don't know if you want to go in the winter/fall or not ...but San Diego should be still good for temp.

I agree with the cruise too.
1 week of that, seems like a month off. (make sure its a 7 day - memories for a lifetime)

Where you're at now...you could do a great northern plains then mountain trip...with a goal of Yellowstone.
But you'll likely would want to do that during warmer months...now could be tricky.

Where have you been? Do you want to fly away someplace or drive somewhere? What time of year?

Boston is great, though the weather is getting cool. Fenway being unavailable makes it a touch less attractive.
DC is a good choice, with lots to do.
You could do a little roadtrip. Take a day to drive to St. Louis. Great zoo, Arch, some good restaurants, Budweiser tour. Head to Memphis after a day or two. Great music scene, great BBQ, Graceland, lots of history. Go to Nashville for another day. More music and entertainment. Maybe hit Indy or Cincy on the swing home. Depending on your other interests you could catch an NBA or NFL game in a couple of those cities, great deals are available on Stubhub a day or two before the game.

Do you have more info to share about your preferences? What are your hobbies and interests? Prefer to fly or drive? Is anyone going with you on the trip? Where do you foresee spending most of your budget, on travel, hotels, food, entertainment, shopping? What have been some of your favorite trips in the past?

    Some of my favorite cities:

Santa Fe, NM – blending of three cultures, more art/craft galleries per capita then any city in the country and a side day trip to Taos or Bandelier National Park and the cliff dwellings

New Orleans, - best party city in the country

Seattle – with a side trip to the San Juan Islands

Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC – for a feel of the antebellum South

All of these cities also offer unique regional dining experiences if that is of interest.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

Miami Beach has great beaches, great restaurants. Love it there and you would be warm and toasty.
If you can wait a month or two and you enjoy winter sports how about Ottawa? You can skate for miles on the canal right through the city. Nordic skiing is nearby. And it has nice city amenities although not quite at the level of Toronto or New York.

Take a cruise...you won't forget it...very relaxing...and everything is taken care for you.

You just have remember to keep some money for flight, tips for crew staff and other fun & games.
You can find 7 day cruise to "off-prime" routes for great rates.

** Off-prime is anything that isn't Europe, Alaska or North/Central Carribean.

And cabin size/location isn't really important...you're not usually in there.

I did one back 15 years ago...still remember it fondly to this day.
Aruba - Cartagena - Panama canal - Caracao

    Flew into Aruba from Florida
Cartegena was exotic and I got a emerald ring worth $2000+ up here for only $200 (same quality certified...but this is where they mine them)
Panama Canal was a cool thing to see.
    Caracao was just AWESOME, beautiful.

Mostly 95% old people...but enough young to enjoy some partying...exclusive to us.
Inexpensive because it's not your typical prime route everyone goes on.
Most of my money went to drink...damn large bar tap.

And bonus...most of it will be warmer. (unless you do Alaska or Northern Europe)
And you get away...no obligations at all.

The west coast of Canada is pretty awesome in terms of geography and culture. Consider going to Vancouver, and be sure to plan visits to both the mountains and the ocean.

Also, in terms of weather, it's one of the mildest places in Canada, considering the time of year.

That's what I suggested. We went from San "something" in California to Ensenada, a 3 day cruise. I would suggest a little bit longer cruise with more stops. I was fighting headaches the entire trip. Whether that was from my braces being tightened or allergies or being at sea, I do not know. Oh - and we picked our starting/ending spot from a place we also wanted to visit and saw SeaWorld.

St. Maarten is nice, been there twice. Of course my "cruise ship" both times was the USS JFK CV-67 so I have no input on any vessels that don't expect you to pull 8 or 12 hour shifts in the engineering mainspaces and pump rooms with the possibility of a "24 and carry on" if need be.

  19. Phoenix AZ. The weather will be great. Rent a car, drive the Apache Trail, see Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Tucson, Saguaro National Forest and possibly a trip for a few days to the Grand Canyon and Momument Valley (although the weather in the north could be iffy).
