So I've been seeing the commercials for Pepsi Next over the past couple days. Today, while picking up some dog food, I saw 12 packs and 2 liters so I thought I might check it out.

The hook for Pepsi Next is that it has 60% less sugar than regular Pepsi. Sounds great. Pepsi is pretty sweet for my taste anyway. So I bought a 12pack and brought it home and tried it.

What the commercial doesn't tell you and what is not displayed on the can until you look at the ingredients list is that they supplement that lack of sugar with an artificial sweetener.

This bugs me two fold. First, can't soft drink companies at least attempt to give us something a little less sweet? I know we are conditioned to have 2 cups of processed white sugar in every drink we consume, but c'mon. Secondly, I am really super sensitive to bitter taste in foods and drinks. For this reason I can't find any beer or liquor that I can drink for refreshment or enjoyment. If I'm drinking alcohol, I mean to get drunk and that's it. Consequently, I hardly ever do. That also means I can taste the merest hint of an artificial sweetener in diet sodas.

C'mon Pepsi, I thought we were making progress here.

It's disappointing. No one makes soda for the rest of us, and so I only drink it on a very rare occasion. When I do, I stick to classics like ginger beer, cream soda, root beer, and malt beverages.

I don't like cola because they all taste too sweet for its flavour. Well, I don't like most cola: tuKola made in Cuba has a bit less sugar and sodium than virtually any other cola I've had. I really liked the taste of it. (Though rum didn't hurt.)

Me? I often ask restaurants to give me half soda water with my drink. Failing that, I ask for "full ice" and let it melt. These drinks are way too sweet. I'd welcome a soda that had full flavour and half sugar. Wholeheartedly. It's not just that I don't like artificial sweetener (or artificial sweetener plus half sugar); I don't like too much sweetness overbearing the flavour of the drink.

Maybe I should invent a line of sodas for the rest of us. Who's with me?

For those who are interested (which includes me), the comparison is as follows:

    Coca-Cola:
    12 fl. oz.
    140 calories
    45 mg sodium
    39 g sugars

    GuS Dry Cola:
    12 fl. oz.
    95 calories
    10 mg sodium
    24 g sugars

    So the GuS cola has:
    • 32% fewer calories
    • 78% less sodium
    • 38% less sugar
I would hit that. I would hit that hardcore. They've reduced two things that are a bane of prepared/processed food and beverages: sodium and sugar.

Thanks for sharing, cynthetiq. I'm going to have to track these down in Canada. They're distributed by some company based in Toronto, and so they are stocked in various indie/specialty stores here. They should be here somewhere.

They also have a dry root beer and dry ginger ale! Yum!

I was all excited about things C2 and Pepsi Next and all the other half-calorie pop drinks because I'm trying desperately to get my woman off the rocket fuel she's drinking right now.

    ...

Has Diet Coke killed anybody yet? I need to do a Google search and find out.

I'm totally with you. I love the idea that less sugar can mean less sweetness. There are so many great tastes hidden beneath the sweetness. Last week, I had to throw away a big bottle of pepsi max. Usually, I drink it so chilled it could have anything in it. Slightly warm, and is was just black sugar water with a micro back-ground personality. Never again.

Shop-bought cakes are another topic, but I cannot eat them. One mouthfull and sweeeeeeeeet. Yuk.

You should also try Dry: The better for you diet, low sugar, all natural soda - DRY Soda

I really like their Rhubarb soda.

I rarely drink soda and when I do it is almost a nostalgic moment. I will occasionally try some of the higher end root beers or otherwise my standard is (don't tease me) Strawberry soda. I used to drink a glass after dance class as a child. Not only am I turned off by the sweetness but I also would prefer to reserve my caloric intake for tasty foods than wasted on a beverage. So more often I would be drinking a good black unsweetened coffee, tea or water with lemon or other natural flavorings.

One thing very frustrating to me is that when out and about and searching for a convenient beverage at a gas station etc along the way it is almost impossible to find a bottled unsweetened tea. It seems that we are so addicted that most of the options are limited to sweetened and artificially sweetened. It used to be relatively easy to find but not so much any longer. So it is either bring my own along or stick to bottled water.

  9. Besides beer, the only carbonated drink I have is LaCroix sparkling water. Lightly lemon flavored, no sweetener at all.

No dice. I'm not sure it's in Toronto.

I drink something similar to this more than I do soda, but sometimes I just want a soda. However, when I'm done drinking it, I don't want to feel like I'm becoming diabetic.

Too bad it's so prohibitively expensive to ship to Canada, otherwise I'd send you some.

I broke that addiction, bro. Haven't bought a pack of Diet Pepsi since February, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've had a Diet Pepsi since then. I gave it up for Lent and stuck with it.

    I want a divorce.

    ...

Bought four cases of Diet Mountain Dew last night. There is no substitute. Not coffee (too earthy), not Red Bull (too expensive), not crack (whack).

I'd do the half water thing when I pour a pop but I end up drinking a big bottle of water chaser after downing the poison most of the time anyway.

I rarely drink any kind of soda. I will rarely drink a Coke, I switched to unsweetened iced tea. I lost 30 lbs in 6 weeks that way, no other changes, other than drinking water as well. I always have water with me, I probably drink a gallon a day.

I rarely drink soda. Regular soda has too many calories, and I can't stand artificial sweeteners, so diet is out. I'd rather have those calories in good food or wine.

Never have seen these commercials and not likely to unless they start showing on youtube (which would not surprise me). The idea to get DISH again was floating around in my head but common sense beat that back quickly I think.
"Pepsi Next" is probably referring to how much sooner your next visit to the dentist will be after drinking this in the kind of quantity they would like you to.

I switched to tea, but from time to time I slip back to drinking soda. :( I haven't had a cuppa tea in at least 1 week. I did have some peach ice tea last night though.

I would drink tea instead, but my tastebuds call the flavour absolutely vile to just plain bad depending on the brand. And I have tried a decent sample of the varieties out there.

When I gave up sodas, I lost about 8 pounds of weight. After a week or so. And I felt so much better! All the preservatives are "wack" and I never felt satisfied after drinking a pepsi or dier coke. Now, I really feel healthier.
