New Year's resolutions

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by Craven Morehead, Dec 28, 2011.

  1. Do you make them? If so have you kept any?

I can't recall making many but in 2000 I resolved to lose some weight and get in shape. I joined a health club in Jan. and have been going ever since.

Not going to make any for 2012.

    What about you?

I'll vow to become less awesome. I'm blinding the people in my surroundings and keep causing traffic accidents.

    Idiots.

I vow to remember the appropriate year date on all of my documents. That's about it, and I probably won't do very well at it anyway.

Usually, quitting smoking causes you to gain weight, so if I were you I'd quit first and then focus on losing weight rather than putting it on. It will also be easier to lose weight if you can work out comfortably, which requires being able to breathe! :)

As for me.. I want to run another half marathon in 2012, keep my grades up, do another sprint or olympic triathlon, and get to level 2 by the end of the year in krav maga if I stick with it. It would also be nice to incorporate yoga practice into my daily life if I can figure that out.

Not a resolution, but I do have a goal to make a decent dent on the "archive my vinyl collection in both Digital audio and picture format" plan. Might actually happen now that I have a 1.5 TB hard drive here and some better lighting equipment for the pictures on the way.

    Here are some of mine:

    - Stop wearing pants.
    - Stop deliberately walking off with other people's luggage at airports.
    - Switch to "low-fat" Cheez Whiz for spraying in enemies' underwear.
    - Quit stalking Cate Blanchett.
    - Continue to cut people off in traffic so they see my witty bumper stickers. (Note: this really works, because when they pull up alongside me they let me know I'm number one with a hand signal.)
    - Continue to fund research for cloning so when my daughter is ready for marriage in 30+ years, I will have a suitable custom-ordered clone of a carefully-screened suitor growing in an axlotl tank.
    - Speaking of my daughter, I will also continue to take photos of her that will embarrass her in her teens.
    - I also vow to be less critical of my wife's decision to have rough sex with our paperboy every Tuesday morning.

P.S. - I suppose I should get around to canceling the newspaper, too. ;)

Then you would be wondering why the newspaper boy is suddenly delivering milk on Tuesday morning that you are not even paying for. :D

My husband and I are trying a new diet regime starting in the New Year that involves eating vegan, but I wouldn't call it a resolution. I think the healthy choices the regime encourages will stick, but I am unsure about still being vegan after the six weeks of that part of the diet is done. We'll see how it goes.

I don't really do resolutions, but certainly I need to get more active.

I guess I need to promise myself to go to the gym when I need to, and not let other things in my life side-track me.

    +1 to what PonyPotato says

And fwiw, in the early days of giving and having given up smoking, put in place the following eating regime: do NOT change your eating habits. This sounds weird, but at the moment, you've got your two outcomes. Pony's, imo, totally right that stopping smoking be the priority.

Immediately you do that, you'll no longer be in Kansas ... your living 24/7 without smoking will make you think and feel differently about various things. Some people put more food in their mouths because they've no longer got the cigarette. At the moment, you already KNOW that you are putting too much food into your mouth .. and that a brilliant start, because, though it won't be time yet to put LESS, you'll know dang well not to put more.

It'll be great practice in food control, which will stand you in good stead for when you decide to go for weight loss. you won't need to change any of your eating behaviours ... you won't need to eat less. You won't need to give up any of your eating. You'll just need to stay steady and refrain from eating more.

It WILL take some will power, because when you've got all that cigaretteless time and space in front of you, you'll be going "OK .. WHAT then??" and MORE food/drink will be one of the options. But there'll be other options, like walking round the house thinking WTF WTF. Or looking at your loved ones and thinking "They are more likely to be standing around my grave Later rather than Sooner, but SHIT this is difficult, hell yeah, we'll be around in the world longer"

Ralphie .. how come I'm coming in strong from this angle?
OK ... I smoked about 25 a day from age 16 to about 44. I did not have weight problem - food intake was not an issue. So, differently from you, I wasn't thinking about food at all. Sooo ... I gave up, and blithely got into over-eating habits. I am now overweight. Not morbidly obese or stuff BUT, IF I'd been where you are at now, I'd have ALREADY had my finger on the pulse of me eating at the same time. I'd have checked it in the bud. But I didn't, which is why I'm getting all excitable and wordy at your post, and I hate it when people get on my case, so, Ralphie, if relevant, please forgive me for the above.

However, if you're OK with it and maybe do stuff like a "Shit Ima Stopping Smoking" thread, then part of MY new year's resolution will be to run alongside you and take active interest.

After posting the below "used tos" in another thread, I thought I should probably address my fucked up attitude in a healthy, adult way what with the new year.

Therefore, Im going to do my best to be finer, less angsty, and more patient with daily walking and mindfullness yoga.

Falling in love is a little trickier, but well see.

    meh.

I used to think I was fine.
I used to have a stomach of steel, now anxiety ridden.
I used to be patient, but that was hurled off one night.
I used to walk, currently I just walk away.
I used to be in love.

  16. Went to our favorite Italian restaurant with QW and daughter. Then a drowsy viewing of one of the Bourne movies. Which? I'd have to look it up. Hugs and kisses at midnight, messages from the sons, then bed.

    Yep, I'm a wild man!

Have never made a New Year's resolution. I'm stubborn when it comes to being beholden to the calendar or the clock, appointments and deadlines notwithstanding.

  18. I'd *really* like to lose 30 pounds this year. I don't think that's going to happen, so I'm not going to focus on that. Instead I'm going to make mini-goals throughout the year in order to maybe make that happen; the first of which is cutting out eating after 9:00pm (or whenever 3-4 hours before bed is).

I'd also like to learn to sweep pick on my guitar. (My resolution for the third year in a row!)

Not really in to making resolutions, but I'm using the start if the month/year as a reset button after the crazy schedule over the past few months. Back at the gym starting today, nothing crazy, just 45 minutes of cardio today. Back to healthier eating, in bed on time, green smoothies, etc. Between being sick for a month, the wacky practicum schedule, pet sitting, and holiday obligations, my whole system is on overload and I'm in the middle of a huge fibro flare up. My goal is to have less than three of them in the coming year. Here's to Reset!

My new year's resolution is very simple, I vow to not get married this year or have hoo hoo ha ha. Since I have no women beating down my door I think I can achieve this easily.
