New MLB commissioner considering a reinstatement for Pete Rose?

Rob Manfred will consider Pete Rose's request for reinstatement | Big League Stew - Yahoo Sports

I'm guessing our old friend @CinnamonGirl has an opinion on this. ;)

It seems that the new commish might let Rose back in the game. Any of our baseball fans here have a thought on it?

Personally, I think he's paid more than a fair price. Betting on games that one effects the end result of as a player or manager is a big deal. The fact that he always bet on his own team to win mitigates it somewhat IMO.

I feel that his original punishment should've been a set ban from working in organized baseball for a certain number of years. Maybe 5-10? Given good behavior in the interim, he should've been allowed back. Some say that if Giamatti hadn't died, that is what would've happened anyway. Some reports say that Giamatti had a deal in principle to slap the "indefinite ban" on Rose, then give serious thought to reinstatement after a few years. They say that Rose only accepted the voluntary ban because an informal deal was in place. Unfortunately Giamatti suddenly passed away at 51, and we don't know what he would've done, thus we are stuck with the current state of affairs.

At the end of the day, I'd welcome a lifting of the ban. I'd be all for placing Rose in the HoF as a player (maybe purposefully leaving the "manager" portion off his resume or plaque?). At this point I'd even let him work in MLB, though I wouldn't be opposed to continuing a short ban on that just for the point of it.

    Opinions?

Rose knew the rules when he bet on MLB games, yet he bet on MLB games anyway. He has been a dick about the whole thing. Keep him out.

Obviously Rose isn't the only player and manager to break the betting rule. I'm sure there are others who actually manipulated their own teams games based on how they bet, something which Rose denies (take his word for what it's worth ). His entire 'But I'm Pete Rose, Mr. Charley Hustle, I'm above the rules' attitude sealed his fate in my book. He chose to be arrogant and defiant, let him continue to pay the price.

To be clear, I think he deserved being punished.

The original deal stated he could be considered for reinstatement after one year.
I feel that the 26 years he has been banned so far are sufficient punishment.

ok, he broke the rules, but after 26 years he should be on a ballot. he was one of the greatest of all time. i look at it like being in jail, you can be up for parole after year. depending on the circumstances most people are released. ( i know it depends on what law they broke),

    He's done his "time".
And now...it's not as bad as others have done in relative comparison over that same time.

    Plus, it's a game.
Fun, fascinating, passionate...but still only a game.

Rose's attitude has had as much to do with his punishment as his crime.

He can sell all the autographed baseballs and pictures he wants. He can even coach a minor league team like he did last year; one not affiliated with a major league team and MLB.

He is not owed a place in baseball or the Hall of Fame and I would keep him out of both.

He coached for one game last year

Pete Rose is all about Pete Rose, not the best interest of baseball.

I see the Hall of Fame as a privilege one earns based primarily on on-field performance, but also considering character issues that harm the game.

But it will be interesting to see how the HoF voters would respond if he becomes eligible.

I agree, the one thing I love about baseball is that it not only rates your talent but you attitude as well, Mat Garza is a great pitcher but with a nasty disposition, And don't even get me started on Alex Rodriguez, He was jerk about his deal. and although they let him back in, I;m willing to bet it wasn't with open arms.

I say we should let him back in and let the voters decide if he worthy of the Hall of Fame.

Wait another 26 year years. By then Rose will most likely be dead, and many of the people who remember him as a player will be very old or dead. If he does ever get into the HOF, whatever information that is provided should include his suspension.

I do not have strong feeling on the issue either way. But I think 26 years is enough for the rule infractions he committed. But I'm not a huge fan of MLB so maybe my take is a little more forgiving then a "Baseball Purest" would be.
