Having grown up at the tail end of the Cold War, I'm not really sure how to feel about this. I'm kind of, "meh" and kind of terrified at the same time. I'm not worried for myself immediately but for those on the left side of the US and the midwestern states.

I haven't really thought much of it even with an active discussion in our politics forum, I just don't feel like this country is much of a threat.

I don't really worry about it at all. In fact, it makes me laugh. If the strike map they showed is believable, I feel bad for people in Austin, TX.

that's what I mean. The visceral reaction should be "Holy shit people can die!" but I've got too much Austin Powers and Team America to laugh at.

Well, part of it for me is that I've been obsessed with the prospect of nuclear war since I was a little kid (yeah thanks Cold War). I feel relatively prepared (shelter-in-place materials, food, cat food, water, medicine, check), and I'm also pretty familiar with our defense capabilities. NK is not a threat. They're more like a yappy terrier trying to bite our heels.

Well if they missiles off and hit anywhere near me I hope that I am at ground zero. I don't want to be around to fight off the Zombies...

I wasn't too concerned of the news, however I am a bit worried about allies and axis. I'm just a pup and still wet behind the ears, but I can see how there would be sides taken on both prospects. Hopefully it's rational to destroy them if they deploy a threat to US territory or US allies.

What part of the US are they turning into a shiny glass surface?
Just kidding obviously. The thought of World War III with North Korea instead of the Soviets is not as "scary" by any means. If they can demonstrate the range that would change things, but we knew the Soviets unquestionably could plaster us with nukes even while we returned fire and turned both countries into nuclear wastelands with horrific casualties.

I grew up in a spot acknowledged as a first strike target. On top of that, there was the risk that the scientists working there would screw something up and kill us.

Anyone who does not have a healthy respect for nuclear weapons is a fool. One begets the other with no other possible conclusions. You can argue about the North Korean's ability to deliver that weapon to a US target, but if you think they would rely solely on rocketry to accomplish that goal (assuming that it is their real intention), then you are unfamiliar with the things that North Korea is actually capable of doing. They are currently the largest counterfeiter of US currency; they kidnapped Japanese citizens and held them for years; they have landed commandos via submarine in South Korea (whether or not they could make a US landing is really unanswerable).

This isn't exactly something that I take lightly. I don't consider it a huge threat to me personally, especially since I don't live in what I presume are primary North Korean targets (West Coast cities plus NYC and DC), but I consider it a possibility. And one that scares me.

It brothers me only because it would be a nuclear attack, even though I live in the east coast. I just think that the kid thinks he is going to just start bombing the shit out of places and he isn't thinking about the reprocussions of it.

Or he is sitting at a table with all of his generals and there all "fuck em we can take em all"

I think that it's ironic that there is a substantial part of the US population thinking exactly the same thing in reverse.

Especially since Iraq and Afghanistan were such cakewalks.

climbing up into this rhetorical space is never a good idea...and itchy trigger fingers and all that from all sides...the idea that launching nuclear weapons is reasonable *either* from nk or the us (proactively dontcha know) is insanity.

Yeah, they were totally cakewalks if the goal was to create quagmires and ultimately lose both wars.

I hope this means that the U.S. will handle things differently in N.K. Of course, I'm optimistic, but realistically, this could mean going better or worse.

At least Romney isn't president, or maybe we'd already be witnessing Operation Stormin' Mormon.

Nervous. I am quite curious if Kim Jong-un is doing this to prove to his country and or dead father that he has the balls to do such an act or if he is bluffing to scare everyone.

  18. Considering that we (the US) won't attack him unless he makes the first move beyond sabre rattling, he can just blather on all he wants, make threat after threat and eventually convince his people that the dreaded Satan (US) backed down since we did not take action. In effect, he has a victory. This appears to all theater designed to 'prove' himself to his people.

While this is true, and more than likely the real intent, the problem is if he takes it so far that SK feels the need to respond. Don't forget they have a pretty new administration there too. NK has sunk naval vessels and killed SK people by shelling islands in dispute, both in recent memory. It's possible that NK will take similar actions as has been done before, but this time SK decides it has to have an equal or greater response. Then NK may feel stuck ratcheting up the actions (as opposed to just words), which could result in a runaway train that ends with a real conflict. And it seems quite obvious that the US would feel forced by its obligations to get heavily involved if that happens.
