GeneticShift Show me your everything is okay face.

Mariska is pretty much my number one ladycrush.

In addition to being an actress, she is a philanthropist and works heavily with survivors of sexual and physical assault, and is basically incredible.

This week, she's been in Detroit, pushing for completion of testing backlogged rape kits.

'Law & Order: SVU' actress Mariska Hargitay decries delay in rape kit testing | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

I think it's horrible how many rape kits have been backlogged in so many major cities. It has gotten to the point where it's near pointless for victims to want to pursue justice for what happened due to this bottleneck. Having to be subjected to a 4-6 hour rape kit where everything on your body is swabbed and photographed and poked and prodded only for it to sit in a warehouse for up to decades is incredibly disheartening. I'm so happy to see progress finally being made in this, and I think Mariska is probably the best face for the cause that anyone could hope for.

I love her. She is on my list..... plus it helps that she's Jane Mansfields daughter. Glad she is doing something.

Good for her. You're absolutely right that she's got the right kinda sway to make this happen.

When I was in college I shocked to learn that the state crime lab has up to a six month backlog on DNA.

All that instantaneous CSI Suitcase Lab shit confuses people into thinking the justice system isn't horribly crippled.

The Houston Police Dept Crime Lab was (most likely still is) one of the worst in the country for backlogs. At least one independent study of the lab recommended dismantling it and sarting over. The sad part is stories will be all over the local news, the outcry will strong, but when media coverage dies down, it's back to business as usual.

The sad part is that if the Feds stepped in and started running the tests the locals would freak out.
There would be cries of "conspiracy to control manhood" or some such nonsense.

We need a senator to pass a bill to get more money in the system for this.
Force the police to use it strictly for this purpose instead of SWAT equipment.
To bad it would never get through Congress.
