Does anyone have any tips for drying fruits and vegetables in a dehydrator? What is good? How long should I leave the machine running, and which foods are best?

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I've never done fruits and vegetables but I just loaded a bunch of marinated venison in this morning.
The dehydrator is a learn as you go device.
There's no real harm in opening it every few hours to see how things are coming along.
You will probably find some general guidelines but then will end up with some trial and error til you find what works best in your machine, and what your preferences are.

I'm interested in a food drier also. I'd like to be able to make my own jerky without all the additives that the commercial brands have. Logic says that it should work more quickly in the winter with the lower indoor humidity.
I think I'll put one on my Christmas wish list.:)

  4. I love dried fruit, especially pineapple. Has anyone had success with that?

I've had dehydrator-made jerky many times, and it is amazing. Both the fruit and the venison kinds. :)

Personally, I've had most success drying fruit with making fruit jerky rather than drying fruit slices (it's difficult to make them all uniform so they dry at the same rate). Basically, just blend a couple fruits together and then pour it onto a plastic sheet that probably came with your dehydrator (or you can buy one).

has anyone tried drying bananas in a dehydrator? How about sweet potatoes? Any tips?
