Mods, Admins, COUNTRYMEN!: this is more of a PSA than it is a discussion, so apologies in advance.

TFP is rife with them, and it makes discussions slower than Terry Schiavo. Here's a website outlining what they are so that hopefully we can avoid them and maybe learn something from one another without letting our competitive natures get the better of us.

just so everyone is clear, i'm pretty sure (not positive) that pointing out someone else's logical fallacy is a strawman. so unless you want a fallacy within a fallacy, just do the best you can and expect that others will do the same without criticizing them and getting off-topic.

lovely :) I personally prefer slippery slope fallacies.

Pointing out where someone else has committed an error in logic does not a straw-man make.

Also, if someone is making a bad argument, then explaining why it is bad could not be less off-topic.

Logical Phallus-y is a polite way of calling someone a dick during an argument. Or so I've been told.

I disagree. We're here to educate each other as well as discuss what's at hand. Plus, arguing the argument by pointing out logical fallacies helps you avoid getting personal.

i'm of the opinion that arguing the argument gets off topic and if anything, pointing out the flaws in a person's argument is more likely to cause them to think it's an affront on them personally.
