There are a few bands that I used to see here that are local to NYC. One of the best things about NYC is that I can just walk to a venue, maybe there will be no cover and I can catch a band trying to bust into the scene.

Try to link to places we can hear their music or see them perform.

From the 90's I used to go every Thursday to Jack the Ripper in the Village to see Tao Jones play. Many drunk nights listening to them.

A band that Skogafoss and I liked was found by accident. We went to see a friend's band Ostronomy in a battle of the bands. They were up against Stupid a punk band from Brooklyn. They won with Hey Alright! and Whatever You Say I think.

I enjoyed seeing the Volunteers, these were a pair of my favorite songs from them.

These days I haven't had much time to go to clubs to see any new acts. I'll have to fix that.

I found these guys by accident when I lived in Austin. I never liked the bands I went to see, but the opening acts were always great. Even really good bands like Dropkick Murphys were disappointing live at Emos, but the opening bands always rocked.

I've seen a few of my town's acts live. I'm pretty out of it when it comes to the local music scene, but occasionally one of my friends will steal me and take me to see someone awesome.

I've been watching a local band named Southern Gunns lately. They are all friends of mine. There isn't a good quality video of them, yet. However this video is Rob's (the lead singer) audition video for The Voice. BTW, odds are if you have were in Vegas and went to see Jesus Christ Superstar, you've seen Rob perform.

does sigur rós and björk count. other than that the music scene here is terrible right now :( (and that even includes sigur rós post 2006 who are now pop music machines)

I saw Reel Big Fish live back in like 1999 when it was at a bar, I stood 4 feet from them and there were about 25 people in the audience. They've come such a long way.
