At least they have the suspect, and so far none dead.

Apparently 1 student died. Unbelievable, totally unnecessary tragedy.

It might be pointless, but it should be a lesson to bullies across the country. Don't F with the kids that have nothing to lose.

Hopefully, schools would learn how to fix these problems before they end up in targeted or random shootings. But, they seem to just rather deal with creating the police state type of campus.

Its a tragedy. I wonder sometimes what in the hell that kids are thinking. I remember when they had the colombine shooting. I was in high school. My mom was freaking out.

aahhh... the irresistable need to highlight an obviously figurative comment...

but yes.. he could have likely gotten the weapon off the black market, or from a friend or family member's collection. if a person wants something badly enough they will find a way to get it...

The real question is what was going on with this kid that made him want this? sometimes i feel like these scenarios have to be attention based. I have met tons of people that just seem naturally insecure, and there is nothing their peers can do to change that... that being said, if insecure people either get pushed, or fall in with poor companions that propogate thier resentment of society, then we end up with tragic outcomes.

Just a hypothesis, and it does involve at least one generalization... i suppose there could be other things, the kid did have a rough childhood, and apparently it hasnt improved, i just cant see our society continuing to accept that excuse. A rough childhood is not an acceptable reason for mass murder... (understatement of the day)

I don't think anyone is looking to justify the shooter's actions; I think he's been arrested. Do you know of anyone who thinks he should be set free? Where did you get the impression that society is excusing his behavior?

It would be nice to understand the mechanisms that led to him deciding to shoot up his school, and I think it is a mistake to conflate the goal of understanding with attempts to excuse.

as always, you are taking simple philosophy and open thought a few steps further than i or other posters in other threads have intended. I didnt accuse anyone of excusing his behavior. the comment was intended to promote the idea that we as a society should be taking some type of conscious effort to mitigate these occurances by some means other than turning our schools into a prison like sucurity setting.

That being said, i have explained myself, and will no longer enable your obvious addiction to arguement and antagonization. ive seen you do it to others, and wont have you do it to me. if you wanna argue, do it with someone who wants to argue back...

    Bronc out.

I apologize for assuming that your implication that society was accepting the excuse of a rough childhood meant that you thought society was accepting the excuse of a rough childhood. Clearly, I jumped to conclusions that weren't justified.

Note to others: Do I appear to have an addiction to argument and antagonization? Be honest, I'm open. Let's make this thread about me!

I'll take that tentatively as a no. Any other argumentative assholes want to set me straight, feel free. I'll go hang out in less pastoral portions of the board. Isn't there a tilted bathroom somewhere around here where I could smoke a cigarette?

    I'd say yes.

But then you'd probably just want to argue about it.

Hey, less half-ass TFP ramboning and more talk about evil hand-held assault weapons vaping zit-faced teenagers en masse.

Despite the flaky definition, I don't like the talk of "spree killer" with less than 5 kills. I mean, he's not worthy of the list.

It's common for people to want to reduce these things to a single factor.

    "It's all the guns!"
    "It's not enough school security!"
    "It's the kid's parents!"
    "It's the kid's neighbourhood!"
    "It's the kid's peers!"
    "It's all the violent media!"

Ah, youth violence...if only you were so easy! Why do you have to be so difficult? Why do you have to be a constellation of factors including environmental, socioeconomic, psychological, physiological, political, social, moral, etc.

Why can't you just be because of guns?!

Don't forget the consequences of teenage McCarthyism in schools. That kinda shit is far worse than these pathetic less-than-five-KIA shootings.
