i said numbers do matter

Back on the other forum there was a discussion about 'is this still america'. It was a protest in Pittsburgh that ended up with a whole bunch of riot cops going after the protestors that hadn't broken any laws. During that discussion there was an exchange between myself and a few others about how these situations would not occur if the citizens carried guns, that the police would do everything politely to de-escalate the situation.

my point has now been proven in the city of Ruidoso, New Mexico where the current mayor didn't feel 'safe' having an armed citizen, his employer, speaking to the city council wearing his handgun openly. So like any other tyrant, scoured the laws of the state and citing an ambiguous section about public property, decided to executive order a gun ban in any public building.

The next city council meeting didn't go as planned for the mayor as 80 townspeople showed up to speak......all openly carrying handguns at their belts. The police on hand there to maintain security became extremely polite in dealing with all the armed citizens as they ignored the mayors order banning guns and addressed the mayor and council denouncing the gun ban.

Numbers do indeed matter. You can maintain your rights if you group together to do so.

    Are you advocating mob rule?

mob rule? there can be no mob rule if you're preserving your own rights. This incident is a wonderful example of how the citizenry can stand up to the creeping advancement of tyranny without a single shot being fired.

  4. It's going to take more than a couple anecdotal incidents to convince me we'll all be better off we we all carry guns. And I support guns rights.

There is nothing unconstitutional about banning guns in public buildings nor are such bans a "creeping advancement of tyranny".

In fact, the decisions that Scalia wrote for the Supreme Court majority decision overturning the Wash DC gun law stated as much:

Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings...

In Ruidoso, the issue is that the mayor imposed the ban unilaterally by executive order rather than by a vote of the city council.

Creeping advancement of tyranny? Should they all go open carry on Delta Airlines next? Maybe go on a national Second Amendment tour? Maybe storm the courts to let judges know who's really boss?

There is mob rule where an unauthorized group bypasses the courts. How was this any different?

As redux points out, the restriction of rights is nothing new, especially not as far as government buildings are concerned.

The tyranny I'd be most concerned about in the U.S. is the kind where guns are virtually powerless. The exception, I suppose, as always, is in the case of anarchy.
